I have a 2019 540 x drive and my wife has a 2017 530. We are happy with the cars.

I usually am the type to replace car batteries before I get stuck. However I think these cars have multiple batteries and are Uber expensive.

Can someone educate me on the location of the batteries, and what each controls?

Also are these diy serviceable for someone who can change a regular car battery ?

What about saving computer settings while changing batteries?

One battery in the trunk under the floor. Second is under the hood up by the firewall on the passenger side (US) under a plastic cover.

Both are easily serviceable as long as you can lift them (trunk battery is heavy!) and can keep track of the positive and negative battery terminals.

I never look3d into what each is responsible for. Sorry.

Assuming I can lift the battery what is the registration process and is that a requirement?

Does the car come back to life once the batteries are changed or is any step required to re program/ re initialize the systems.

You need to check what batteries you have fitted.

Neither car has DHP

Any ideas on what batteries are in there ?

As far as I know, the rear battery is the "main" one and the front battery is used only for auto start/stop. I installed the Bimmertech remote start kit a few months ago and that required disconnecting the battery. So I disconnected the rear one and confirmed that all circuits in the interior of the car were de-energized. Having said that, I know that there's a rather complex battery management circuit in these cars so I can't speak with any authority on how and when the front battery comes into play. If anybody here knows more, please share, thanks!

You register the battery to tell the car that you have a new one and the charging system can go to a new battery setting vs what it’s adapted to with your old battery. If you don’t reset things, you’ll be over aggressive on the charging of the new battery which may shorten its life.

As far as I know, batteries are plug and play on our cars otherwise. Change them out. Drive car.

I've unplugged both batteries doing various installs and there really isn't anything special. The only thing different is as admranger stated earlier about registering a new battery. This is easily accomplished with the Bimmerlink app.
