Pulling the trigger on an extended warranty

After much procrastination, research and comparison between BMW offerings and aftermarket, I'm going to take a shot on the Route 66 warranty. It's exclusionary and covers the car for 7 years or 120k miles. It pretty much excludes nothing. It's $3,000. The low cost had me the most concerned. Too good to be true thing.

I spoke with my shop this week when having an oil change. First thing he asked me was am I going to keep the car to 100k miles. Although that is a crapshoot because I am so compulsive, I made the decision that I will. Especially with V8's being phased out.

He said for the money, it's worth a shot. He mentioned even parts like control arms and bushings are covered and I'll get my money back on that alone. He also said he's very good at pushing maintenance items to be covered.

We shall see. I've heard great things and horrible things about Route 66, but really none from actual BMW owners with it.

I've put so much money into this car with modifications that I feel it would be stupid not to keep it and with that, have some piece of mind. I hope it plays out that way.

I know a lot of people have either followed my decision making process and research, so I'm posting this to let those who want to know what I ended up doing.

Still seems to good to be true given some of the other $10,000 quotes I got, but hey, what's another $3,000.

PFA, happy to answer any questions.

Nice!! I knew Sam had the Route 66 warranty but he hasn't used it. I missed that thread. Thanks! Definitely feel better.

We all know how mods can affect the OEM warranty, what about aftermarket warranties such as this?

I’ve only heard good things about Route 66. I skipped them as they said they wouldn’t cover my PHEV which is a shame.

I trust you’ll keep us posted on your experiences with them positive or negative claims wise.

Aftermarket is better for that. You can bring it anywhere.

Keep us updated. There's so many different options out there and it seems as if all of them have their outs not to pay a claim with their exclusionary list.

That’s an incredible price- I can’t see it not paying for itself. Did your bank offer it?

Good for you Joe. I am still on the fence. Will BMW dealers honor it? Also do they prorate a refund if you sell the car before the term has expired?

Thanks for the update! I've been following along, since I'm a year behind you on my CPO coverage.

As others have asked, I'd be interested to know who you bought it through and if there's any refund period.

The extended warranty on my previous Tahoe almost paid for itself in about 18 months with a new touchscreen/infotainment and a new thermostat. And I was still refunded a portion upon trading it in.

I am surprised. Conceptually, you have both an engine and motor so more complexity; but on the other hand, recent studies have said that PHEVs are the most reliable cars.

Yes, it's only offered through banks and maybe dealers, but yeah, I got it from Hanscom Federal Credit Union.

Thanks Pete. Wasn't an easy decision. I was seriously contemplating self insuring which would have been a first for me on a newer BMW. Yes, is looks like there is a cancellation refund of some sort. See my reply to Todd below.

Route 66 is mostly sold through financial institutions and dealers to the best of my knowledge. Here is the cancellation language. Looks like there is some type of refund although it looks like they make you jump through hoops.

Nice that it's transferable too. If you sell private party, there is some value there.

$3,000 is very attractive. Worth opening a checking account somewhere if your current bank doesn't offer it, hypothetically.

I was shocked as well. Especially considering parts of the EV drive train are covered for 15Y/150K miles under CARB rules since I'm in a CARB state. Including CARB mandatory battery coverage for 10Y/150K miles. They wouldn't be covering the cost of any of the major "PHEV" components...

I opted to for the BMW coverage instead...

Not really for the power train stuff, but for the electronics. Like the one I see pop up every so often on the forum where the iDrive HDD unit fails and BMW wants $5K to replace the head unit for it... Among other expensive little minefields.

Looks a little tricky to unravel. A total loss requires an optional endorsement and limits its payout to $2K and a prorated refund deducts the bonus paid to the financial institution who sold it and the value of any paid out claims. That all said. Still a very solid price point so unraveling it probably isn't important unless totaled before it gets exercised.

Also better than the BMW ESC where they offer no refunds, including in the case of a total loss, unless you purchase it in CA where they are legally required to offer refunds in both total loss and prorated cases.

I'll be closely watching your claims updates as it will be valuable in my next extended warranty purchase, but I also hope you don't have a ton of claims!

Hell yeah! So basically you'll get 2 years out of it, right?

Seven years or 120k miles. I'm going to try and keep this car a while. The amount of time I keep it will really come down to garage space.
