BMW shows how 530e iPerformance will charge wirelessly in 3.5 hours
In this clip, you’ll learn more about “BMW Wireless Charging”, the technology that allows energy transfer to take place without the use of cables. Wireless charging for the high-voltage battery will be made available as an option for the BMW 530e iPerformance from 2018. The system consists of a base pad with integrated primary coil – which can be installed in a garage, for example, but also outdoors – and a secondary coil integrated in the underside of the vehicle. An alternating magnetic field is generated between the two coils, through which electricity is transmitted without cables or contacts at a charge rate of up to 3.2 kW. This form of power supply to the high-voltage battery is extremely convenient for customers and involves a charging time of around three-and-a-half hours.

This also has a gas engine and is a hybrid, so the battery is not that big, for a plug in hybrid it's not that impressive but would be for an EV.

Although not bad, BMW is bragging in the headline meanly with the fact that the battery is very small. The smaller it is, the faster it's replenished.
Small anecdote; Just read that in Belgium they'll scrap the fiscal advantage for this kind of hybrids faster because the battery is apparently dimensioned to merely pass the submission tests on electric, but not actual drive on it. Which most owners effectively don't. |

That's looking cool, but wonder what is the energy loss here...

Too good to be true. It's about 50% for mobile phone wireless chargers.

Well. I took a look to this on the IAA in Frankfurt as this was presented already in April 2017. No too concrete answers so:
- When will it come > late 2018 - Will it be standard on the 530e > no, option - What will it cost > open - Can it be installed on already produced 530e > no 3.2kwh is a good start. Sounds slow (as BEVs load at a wallbox with 11/22 and even more kWh / 530e only with 3.7kwh!), but e.g. an i3 with a 33kwh battery would also be charged over night by this. So the real questions are: - When to other PHEV (330e, 740e, X5 4.0e, i8) and BEV (i3) get this? and even more important - Will this be a standard followed by other manufacturers? If the plate is only for BMW and e.g. Mercedes brings out a different one not being compatible at least I would still stay on a standardized wallbox instead. |

This is not charging without a cable. Clearly, you still need to have your charging pad connected via power cable. Since most people will not tear up their concrete floor just to install the pad, you will still have a power line on the ground.
This doesn't really impress much at all. Just makes charging your hybrid even lazier than before. Some may argue that is luxury nowadays, but I see it as a half-assed solution. |
