Fuel Range Equation

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
It's not a complaint but rather some sort of survey to learn whether or not others have encountered this .
My last fuel range was 570 kilometers and filled the car up . It took 69.42 liters of gasoline almost empty ,fuel range showed less than 20 kilometers .
Average fuel consumption is around 12 lt/100 km .
Everything seems normal but here's the funny part of the fuel saga .I reset the odometer and as soon as I did it the fuel range under the fuel gauge registered 803 kilometers which means I could drive up to 800 kilometers without needing a refueling
I don't think I could achieve that My car barely hit 600 kilometers let alone 800

Not quite sure what you are on about but the way I read your question there's no real mystery. BMW - like every other brand I've owned which had a trip computer - bases its "distance to empty" not on the overall average fuel economy of your last tank, but on the average fuel economy over the last 15-20 minutes before you refilled.

So I'm guessing in the last 15-20 minutes before you refilled you were doing a good fuel efficiency - perhaps driving on a freeway/highway? No great mystery here.

And I meant to add as an aside - I would never let my fuel tank get so close to empty. The fact that you had a distance to empty of only 20km and you managed to put 69 litres of fuel (in a tank that I though was was only 68 litres) means you would have had very little fuel left in your tank. That's a potentially dangerous game to play.

I typically fill my car after a drive where the current average mpg is climbing fast over the last few miles. Car is hot and probably averaging about 38mpg (UK gallons) at the time. So my range can be very optimistic. Drive a few miles, or back home, and it all becomes much more realistic, reflecting my longer term average.

By contrast I filled on Tuesday while driving around Inverness, after seeing my mpg average drop off fast. Range was lower than I'd typically see, getting back out on the open road, it steadily improved. Driving 75 miles home, 'only' cost me about 30 miles of the original predicted range.

pretty sure the tank in the g30 ( at least the 540i) is 66 litres according to the manual.
thats slightly smaller than the f10 at 70 litres.
highest range I have seen on my car was 550 miles for a full tank but more like around 500 more typical.
I too would not run the tank so low.

When I fill my 530d it can show up to 1100 km range (the G30 does this automatically after a fill). With 15k km on the clock the OBC shows an average 46.7 mpg (I know, I am generally metric but I still can't relate to l/100km ) , which beats the circa 42.0 I achieved on my F10 530

Thanks for your replies, a little update : I drove 12 kilometers yesterday. Before casting off the fuel range showed 803 kilometers , after driving of which I said above 12 kilometers, it remained same
I like to coast off when closing to the city lights however if I see it's already green then I slightly tap the gas pedal down to catch the green light .
I don't use ECO PRO gismo at all, mostly Comfort Mode is on

530i has a great range then, enjoy
Your driving style during those 12kms must have been even more economical than the period 803km range calculation was based on.

I am at 4300km now and averaging 13L/100km.
50% very spirited driving, 40% highway and 10% stop&go traffic
Much better than my E92 335i

Good efficiency, impressive economy for such a real world fast car.
My G30 530d is now at 5000 miles and reading 44.9 mpg from new, not embarrassed to admit I use the eco pro for dense traffic / slow speed limits / average speed cam sections.
Think if it as free fuel for when the traffic disappears and sport becomes the only option

Am I that bad. My on board computer of G30 520d is now showing 40.1 mpg. When I used to do long distance drive was getting 45-50 mpg. I routinely turn off stop/start button. I do use Sport drive but I also use EcoPro and Comfort when necessary
