had an account back in 08, i notice it was just a window for people to gossip and make judgement of what others were doing with their lives.
When i found out my wife was preg, we decided it was time to keep our lives private.
Well that didnt sit well with certain family members, they took it upon themselve to post pics of my son all over facebook. I do not have any contact with them.

This!
one of the major reasons why i fell out of love with facebook. my wife is the perfect example. its always somethign about someone doing a home renovation, or buying a new handbag, or getting plastic surgery. i had to tell her.. if you are always going to worry about what someone else is doing.. or what someone else has bought..you will never be happy. she was brainwashed by what she was seeing.. and felt the overwhelming urge to "keep up with the joneses" so to speak.

Coincidence? Perhaps, but I doubt it.

Outside of FB, she was also looking for a job and I started getting email about Glassdoor jobs - a site I haven’t visited in 5 years.

I only had a shell FB account with a fake name when on Bumble. I never posted anything.
i had a similar experience but with instagram. My wife was looking for storage solutions for the house. we were having a physical conversation about a shoe cubby from the container store that someone mentioned. keep in mind i have never accessed anything container store related from my phone.. and what do i see when i logged into instagram. an ad from container store for a shoe cubby.
i got totally freaked out... i need to quit the internet

Scary stuff!

Leave it to humans to agree to carry a device everywhere we go which can record location, audio, video, and internet usage yet cry about privacy concerns at the same time

Siri is the devil Hard to kill it all. Every new app comes with Siri search enabled. You have to turn it off in every app.

I'm also in IT, and I recently deleted my account. My account has pretty much been inactive for years other than to accept invites to various events and to wish a few people happy birthdays. I figured there was no need to keep it for my limited use given the security concerns and that most of the stuff I saw posted was either people bitching about or bragging about their lives.

Even before deleting my account, I removed the app from my phone years ago due to how intrusive it was. I can certainly see the benefits of using FB for some people, however I think for most of us, the cons outweigh the pros.

leaving FB = missing a lot of stuff with friends.

Compromise :

third party app that will drastically reduce the complete FB and messenger experience.

I'm using frost on android. Black theme is awesome.
No notification. no ads. you can't even post videos nor gif.

you still can see your feeds and message.

This is perfect, with this app Ive reduced about 80-90% of my facebook use, and it wont sell your info and won't always running on your phone.

I'd lost a lot of "friends" since FB is online, started with that I'd missed few parties and got asked later, where I've been.
Since I had no clue I said that I wasn't invited. It was going like "Oooh, xxx had invited all at FB".
Man, if someone knows that you aren't enlisted there and is too lazy to text you or just give you a fuqing call...I could dispense of those friends.

I still get on to browse but don't post at all.

I'm still mostly on Instagram though, but at least that is more media oriented and less about people posting long dumb paragraphs about their life

I think social media is fine and can be a fun way to pass the time or connect with like minded people. You just have to realize that people are posting one side of their life trying to appear richer/cooler/better than they actually are.

You just lose the per-client filtering options.

I have used Pi-hole for a few years, specifically to block FB and FBCDN.

Funny IT professional story from yesterday. I was asked by a local elementary school yesterday for my opinion on a $150 black box that they found for filtering traffic on classroom tablets. The vendor's web site only has one picture of the device, and even that couldn't hide that it was a Raspberry Pi. Not a single picture of the config/interface screens, and no online manual to see that it is a re-branded Pi-hole. At less than a 50% markup and bundled with lifetime support and K-12 filter database subscription, it isn't worth the headache of telling them how to make their own to save $50.....
I got Pi-Hole up and running. Simple as can be. And it works awesome. Thanks for the heads up on this.

And I like twitter more that nothing needs to be done except text. When you communicate with people, you share your opinions and you don't need to take photos. I am a writer and have already become a popular person https://southfloridareporter.com/how...ul-on-twitter/

I have only a technical facebook account for many years. I need it exclusively for business or to view something that requires registration via Facebook. My account is tied to a phone number that probably doesn’t exist anymore, so all the advertising potential does not fall on my smartphone ))
I am satisfied with this state of affairs, i.e. it seems like I can use services and at the same time - I am practically incognito for the system.

I quit facebook a few years back now and i still cant believe how much of a difference it made. I would always get sucked into the drama and arguments out of boredom i guess and it’s made myself feel like a happier better person without dealing with it. I recommend to anyone considering it to absolutely get rid of theirs.

That said i still occasionally use stuff like instagram but i feel that isnt really the same as its basically just for pictures.

I am in a running group, a bourbon club and a bourbon secondary market group, don't know of a better way they could be managed or run than Facebook.

I stopped using FB maybe 10 years ago - still have an open account that I use to communicate with a small subset of friends who only use FB/Messenger, but don't read anything on it or open it otherwise and that time is instead spent browsing bimmerpost. So.. a wash?

Seems like you all could meet at a bar!

Seriously, I have the same situation with the BMW CCA chapter and some other groups that really communicate exclusively via FB. But I’ve been removing friends and am down to just a handful now (if you post anything political, you get unfriended immediately whether or not I agree with your post). So it is becoming a groups bulletin board for me.
