For the online Map Updates I just set the region of the US I needed it to download on the BMW ConnectedDrive Portal. Then it automatically downloaded the latest updates for the region and when I get into the car it has a note that it downloaded them when they are sent out. I don't need to hit anything in the car.

I haven't had my car long enough yet to ask the dealer about the updates for the base map itself (so I get the latest updates for Canada and other regions). If you're trying to update the base map that will need to be done at the dealer or using other means. I have no details yet on if that is free when subscribed like the online updates (I hope so).

Did you verify the region is correctly set on the portal website?

I'd be interested to know if the Map updates are linked to your VIN number in some way?

Surely otherwise we could just download and install

yes map updates are linked to your VIN. When you download off the connected site , it is for your car only. It won't work in any other.
Downloaded it today and will update my car at the weekend.

2020-1 map update has finally acknowledged the removed M4 tolls that the car has been telling me I need to stop for for the last year.

It's a little thing but hurrah!!
