Already updated mine to 2020-1 few weeks ago, though it gave nothing new from 2019-4 in my local neighborhood where i mostly drive. Major highway work and new intersections has been created which have been finished since last summer and still not updated to BMW maps, what a let down. i guess Finland's not the top priority and i would see it still okay if one map version would go over from major modifications to the roads, but two versions already and no changes..

I also rarely see any changes but on the odd time I have seen speed limits corrected on a road.

It's certainly a service I will buy once the initial 3 years are up on my car )July)

Newbie question: 2020 M550i. Are these map updates automatically installed? My map release is 2019-2.

You need one of two options. USB map updates or OTA updates. Check in your connected drive account or the app and it's will tell you what services are active. Then check what you are entitled to. BMW keep changing the entitlements but broadly OTA is free, USB is not

Also ota updates are small updates whereby usb are the complete database. 30GB give or take

As it's a 3017 model it may be close to the 3 years free update expiring.
When you got the car did you get set up with a bmw connected account?
This is key as you will need this to login and download the maps as the maps are set up just for your car , you can't just download them from the web.
If you do not have this you need to speak to the dealer to get that sorted. I'd like to think the previous owner is removed from this as well. This account will also allow you to use the bmw app that amongst other things allows you to see info on your car, send destinations to it and lock and lock it. ( see why it's important that bmw ensure the previous owner is wiped from this!)

After 3 years you will have to pay for this , maps I think are around £150 or so , I will find out for sure when I renew mine.

Long and short if you are able chat to your dealer about all of this. They really should have gone through this to be honest.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to setup a bmw connect account. I could not see map updates anywhere but I'm guessing I need to use a desktop computer to download the map correct? Thanks again.

Yes best on a desktop. Not particularly intuitive in my opinion .
You will need a 64GB usb drive to copy to. Be aware the download speeds are slow , it can several hours to fully download.

You are in the US according to your profile. If so, I don’t believe we have the option to download full map updates like the U.K. has. We only get regional map updates OTA. I believe full updates are dealer installed.

yup, US map are regional only, by the way for those who have purchased the entire NA, is it really the entire north america? I.e. does it include Canada and Mexico (don't think I'll drive to Mexico from NYC, but will definitely drive to Canada from NYC)

Yeah the NA maps include Canada and Mexico. I drive to Canada frequently and would be annoyed if it didn't include Canada. I'm also not likely to drove to Mexico and distance is only one of the reasons.

I looked and saw that my subscription is good till 2021. My map says I currently have the 2016 version and that there is a 2019 update (if I am reading it correctly). But when I click the 2019 to try and update nothing happens. Is there anything wrong that I'm doing? Thank in advance for the help.
