Engine off/door open/radio still on
I finally cracked the radio off/door open puzzle. If you press the engine button before undoing your seatbelt then everything will turn off when you open the door. If on the other hand you undo your seatbelt before pressing the engine button then the radio will stay on when you open the door.

And it also changes if your co-driver is still sitting on his seat. It will stay on.

well, guess I'll stay with the dumb way, shut engine off (and foot not on break), if can be bothered, press the radio button (or don't bother) and in any case, walk away, hit the lock button to have everything shut...

Thanks for posting this. I wish you could set it so that pushing OFF actually turned everything off. The behavior seemed unpredictable to me which makes it even more annoying. Now, if I could only figure out why sometimes the headlights stay on indefinitely when I get out...

Curious, is there a scenario where the lights never turn off until you lock the doors?

I'm not sure about locking doors but on many occasions my headlights stay on all night in my garage (didn't lock doors). They are set to auto. Sometimes my wife works late and she tells me my lights are on when she gets home. Sometimes I leave for work in AM and the lights are on. wtf

You can always use the tried and true method. Press start/stop to shut off engine and then press and hold radio volume button for 2-3 seconds to turn off all electronics except ambient lights which will time out. That way it doesn't matter if you sit in the car or get out. I think that should work.

Here is a related question. I have not yet collected my 540i but previous BMW's and wife's current X5 35d won't let you sit in the car, engine off and listen to the radio for any length of time, such as in a drive in movie. Are the G30's better at this or do we have to keep pressing the start / stop button every 15 mins or so to keep the radio alive.

I agree this is crazy. I called BMW customer service today and said I can’t figure out how to turn off the car - I have a Masters degree in Computer Science!! I keep it in my garage and I don’t lock the car. After being on hold for a few minutes she told me to press the radio power button until it turns off (radio button also turns off the digital dash). Great!!
So tonight I tried it and the radio turned off but the angle lights stayed on...not just to light the path for a few minutes but stuck on. Last few mornings they stayed on overnight. Yes my lights are set to auto. I played with turning the lights off but did the same thing. It also keeps the ambient lighting on inside and random orange buttons. I don’t think it’s a feature. I will try the seatbelt trick next but I don’t remember my 2004 530i doing this and my eClass I had for 7 years never had a problem turning off. In fact this is the only car I have ever owned or rented that won’t turn off. I also bought a 530e and it did the same thing. I returned the 530e because the battery only lasted 30 minutes in gas battery mode. It only lasts 15 minutes in battery mode. 2 years and 11 months and back to Mercedes. I just lock in the car, press the key is like < 1 sec thing, though I can see if you park in your own garage, why bother?

I am forgetful and grab things out of the car. My house is 3 levels with the garage being on the bottom. So if I don’t have the key I have to go to the third level to get the key. Yes I could lock it. Yes I could keep my key on the second floor. But a better question is why does the car not turn off like every other car brand?

The only way I can get the lights to turn off is to manually turn the lights to off with the switch on the dash. Locking the car doesn't turn them off. I'll video next time it happens.
Edit. I didnt want to hijack this thread. I think I have some software glitches in my 2018 530e. new thread Last edited by Krash7172; 01-25-2019 at 12:19 AM.. |
