What a bargain. A fully loaded 540iX in DK will set you back abt. $200k

I have the sun roof, it was a ex demo. I have started to like it. Makes the cabin a lot lighter, and with it part open it’s ok to drive along with. Worth the money, I don’t think so. But it’s there so may as well use it.

530i is sold in denmark. Base price is about 90-100k USD- and we don’t get a lot of extras on the base model.

Pricing is outrageous 😢

Damn! That buys you a nicely optioned 7-Series, S-Class or loaded M550i here in the US.

I have a fairly well-kitted G31 tourer with a pan roof. Love it. I don't usually open it unless I'm just bimbling slowly around the local lanes but I do like having the cover retracted to let light in. Maybe a hard option to justify normally though as I wouldn't say that Scottish weather is unduly warm!.

Agreed though that the pan roofs have a poor reputation for leaks long-term and that BMW have a poor reputation for managing to then fix them!

My F80 has the CF roof which looks much cooler than the sunroof in my opinion. However for the G30 I really wanted to try a sunroof, bring a bit of light into quite a dark interior. We don't really get the weather for a sunroof, and it is an expensive upgrade, and adds weight and all that.... but looking forward to it all the same.

Wow that is a really big difference in the cost of cars between Sweden and Denmark. The price in Sweden is comparable to US price. We pay tax based on state and in Virgina it's only 4.5% for a car.
Why is the price and tax sooo high in Denmark?

Hi,

Living in Stockholm, Sweden. I'd say that in Stockholm you'd be hard pressed to find a) a sedan and b) G30 or G31 (predominant) without a sunroof.

I myself enjoy our fully loaded 540iX Touring (see this thread) with its panoramic sunroof.

The blind cover is almost always fully open in our car, the light falling down on the Mocha-leather is tremendous and really lets the interior come to its full potential; otherwise the car would be way too dark.

Driving extensively through Europe this summer in searing heat I must say that the panorama glass does an exceptional job of keeping heat outside. I open the roof around town or pottering slowly through scenic routes, at speeds you do get a lot of buffeting.

The prevalence of sun roof really depends on the packages dealers put together in each country. Here in Sweden there have been two popular launch packages - Innovation Edition and Ultimate Edition (what I have) and they both include the panoramic sunroof if you go for a Touring.

Regarding the weight, meh, the car is a pig anyways, I'd reckon any weight reduction is negligible. My car weighs 2000 kgs with a full tank (on accurate scales) so I dunno about weight reduction. Interesting enough, my friend's 540iX weighs 2035 kg, the only two differences are that he has the 20inchers and adaptive suspension, while I went for 19s and passive M-suspension.

On my F80, I'd never contemplate the added weight, but again, that's a different car.

From Norway here. I recently leased a 530e 2018, roughly the specs:
  • M-sport package
  • Comfort seats front
  • Ambient interior lightning
  • Sunroof
  • Sun curtains back
  • Parking Assistant Plus
  • DAB+ radio
  • Charging cable
  • Navigation and bluetooth professional
  • BMW display key
  • Adaptive LED headlights
  • Driving Assistant
  • BMW Head-Up Display
  • BMW Gesture Control
  • Steering wheel heating
  • Active Protection
  • Runflat tires
  • Ventilation and heating front seats
  • Traffic information
  • Summer and Winter Tires // 18''
  • All services subscriptions, except from CarPlay
  • Service for 3 years/40000 Kms.

What I don't have is adaptive cruise control, lane-assist and all of that of the driving assistance plus package.

List price: NOK720.000 // ~USD83.800

With discounts (I was told this was a sort of promotion, which I think it's because they wanted to get rid of the last few 2018 models they had): NOK 620.000 // ~USD75.000

BTW, I love the sunroof and the adaptive headlights

Although I now live in the US, I started driving in the UK. I personally DETEST sunroofs, especially the panoramic ones. First, it is weight in the wrong place. Second, I find light over my head distracting. I drive most vehicles in Tiger Tank mode, sunroof covered, sun visors down 24/7. It drives some passengers nuts. Don't like it? Take the bus.

As for them being rarely seen in Northern Europe, I must assume that the OP did not include the UK in his assessment. In my experience, the UK is OBSESSED with having a sunroof. I have often said that claustrophobia is the second most popular hobby in the UK after sex. My late mother could get a panic attack watching somebody get in an elevator (lift) ON TV!! The sunroof fixation in Britain just proves it. Maybe its having 63 million+ people crammed onto an island smaller than the state of Nevada, then packing most of them into the southern third. Can't say I miss that. The elbow room in the SW deserts is a bit more generous.

I WISH the UK were obsessed with sunroofs! It was the lack of cars with sunroof that pushed me to order new. When I bought my F10, only one suitable car in the country had a sunroof at the time I was looking. On some other cars, I've had to do without altogether. No one here seems to option the sunroof on cars. Pano roofs on SUV's seem more common though for some reason.

The weight is a total non-issue on something weighing as much as a G30. Even more so with SUV's.

Here in Florida the sunroof is enjoyable because it adds light to the cabin and makes it feel more airy. I specially appreciate the tinted glass which filters out much of the heat.

However in our 10 months of straight summer heat/humidity, don't get to open it up much. But at night makes for a nice drive for sure.
Here in Arizona I use it mostly to crack open while I am parked outside to let the hot air rise and escape.
Yes makes sense to aid the AC cool down the interior.

One of the reasons is that you have VAT baked in whereas we cite prices sans sales tax.

Probably doesn't account for most of the difference but certainly some of it.

Love my sunroof. It is closed and covered when I am parked. Uncovered most of the time, and open when the temp is right. I actually prefer it closed but uncovered. Most of the summer in Texas is just too hot to open it, but it is still nice to get the light in with it uncovered. Had my tint guys tint it, and that is very nice. Not sure how you can not like this!

I wouldn't own a car without a sunroof - even while living in Texas. I put 3M Crystalline 40% on it when I tinted the rest of the car. Hardly feel the heat at all.

I would like to have a choice of no sunroof here. I only use it going through tunnels in sport mode

Same here. Is there a sunroof delete option that’s not on the option sheet (sort of like the 4-zone climate control that’s not an option but it kind of is?

As a fresh air freak in the uk who never uses the aircon and puts the windows down at every opportunity I'd have loved the sunroof option on my 530d but it's just too much cash to swallow......

I am a sunroof addict, absolutely can't have a car without one and I open it at all times regardless of temperature unless it is raining, and then I have it open in the vented position. I actually like it more when its cold outside - to have the heater on but the sunroof open makes the car climate feel just perfect. I just cannot drive without having some air in the cabin but I do not like having windows down.

When buying used, it was always the one option that made 95% of suitable cars, unsuitable for me, as they would have no sunroof but every other option I wanted.

I bought my G30 new and it was the first option I selected, despite the £1000 cost - it was that important to me.
Agrée 100%. Even if it's not 'sporty' thé open air is a must for me.
