Not surprising. I almost never see non-xDrive variants of BMW's (unless M cars). Remember who BMW's core market is nowadays. Hint: Not enthusiasts. Most consumers would interpret lack of AWD as being a disadvantage and lack of value.

Well the new 3 is the new 5 and the new 5 is the new 7.

Just waiting on that new 1 to be the new 3. I suppose the 2 has already become the new 3 coupe.

There's nothing wrong with the F10 design. If the design resembles the F10, I'm all for it. What most people are looking for is the weight reduction. How much better would the F10 be if it didn't weight as much as it does?

This G30 series will utilise weight reduction using pressed steel , aluminium, magnesium and A Carbon fibre load bearing section of the chassis taking reduction to 100KG.

The G80 M5 takes this to 180 -200 KG using CFRP within the drivetrain , suspension and body panels.

Remote start is against the law, to have(as OE on a car) over here in Germany. Same thing goes for audible car alarm(chirping when arming/dis-arming). You won't see that on any German plated car.

We'll know in about 6-10 months. G31 will trail G30 by about this much.

No more hood cut line and shorter rear overhang. Plus tech updates and weight loss equals excellent F10 successor!

Ok thanks. So now what's missing is a G31 X-Line a kind of response to the A6 allroad.

Here in Southern California, that ratio is flipped. I hardly see any xDrive BMWs, SUVs notwithstanding.

Yes, it does. For those of us who fondly remember the E39, the F10 and the G30 are notably larger - larger and heavier in fact, than many of us want an "Ultimate Driving Machine" to be. So, we are gravitating downward to the F30, and its replacement or perhaps even the 2er. As for the reduced weight of the G30 - great, but given the whale-sized dimensions/heft of the F10, too bad they couldn't have doubled the weight loss. Otherwise, for those wanting a BMW badge on a land yacht, this should do it.

Can we keep it on the down low?

While I appreciate all the cool insight, I am a bit concerned that sometimes insiders should keep secrets better.

Interesting kidney grill slats. They are not open as usual but seem to be closed to much airflow
Even the hybrid needs some cooling air for the engine ?

The average BMW driver probably doesn't know which axle powers the car, and SoCal dealers spec them as RWD because it's cheaper that way. Audi sells plenty of AWD cars in SoCal; people there would not stop buying BMWs because they were xDrive. Well, a few might.

I'm not sure I'm crazy about the idea either - I'm on record that RWD BMWs are always way more fun than their AWD versions. But the only reason BMW would do that would be that they know it would cost them more to import the RWD variant than they would gain by selling it.

A 5 series having lost 200 pounds would be a great thing. My F10 is 400 pounds heavier than my E60 was, and it feels like more than that.

20 miles??? Seriously?? What's the point with 20 miles?
Should at least do 70 miles in real life and 100 miles on paper.

For startrers, that 20-mile battery-only range is enough for people to get around emissions taxes in congested cities (like London, for example). Tool around the city on electric power, then switch to petrol when outside the city limits.

I'm encouraged to see the 5-series getting PHEV treatment, and am holding out hope they introduce this capability on the G11/G12 7-series when it debuts next year. Even if the range is only 20 miles, it'd be enough to get me from my garage to the onramp of the highway for my commute to work, then offramp to garage during my drive home. My existing car returns abysmal MPG on the "garage to highway" portion of my daily commute. Once I'm on the highway, I get great MPG.

We can expect the hybrid powerplant to be similar to the 3 Series hybrid plug-in discussed by BMW last week. That means a battery between the trunk and passenger cabin which propels an electric motor contained within the CVT transmission casing. It will cover up to 20 miles on solely electric power.
This would be the first use of a Rear Wheel Drive Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in a BMW???

Is this a mistake or has ZF created a new hybrid RWD transmission using CVT technology?

Is the G30 platform scheduled to use the Mini FWD power-train?

ZF does have an 8-speed hybrid trans based on the same as currently used in the BMW lineup.
http://www.zf.com/corporate/en/produ...smission.shtml

Jason, as a automotive transmission instructor I'm interested in possibility of a new RWD CVT design that is described in the post. Do you have any additional power-train info for the G30?

It's fairly easy to precondition the car when you have a big battery on board. The i3, even as sold in Germany, I'm pretty sure has that capability. It's just that starting an ICE and just letting it sit to warm things up (or cool them down) doesn't really help matters and doesn't warm up everything like the transmission and differential or other bearings on rotating drivetrain parts, so is a false indication if things appear to be warm.
