Coolant temperature is more traditional for BMW than oil temp on non-M Models.
People are also more used to seeing coolant that oil temp.

Some of the larger 6 Cylinder models have lately had oil temp gauges but then they do things like give the M2 no gauge.

Probably comes down to the interior designers choice.

This is concern too. My last hope is it can be configured or at least coded on the fully digital dash... The car knows the info so why not show it.

My 320d F30 shows oil temp. I thought that G30 is the same. Hmmm

Could also be the confusion oil temperature causes with some users. Colder climates, oil takes ages to get to temperature, particularly in the diesels.

Even my 535i can take over 8 miles to come off the 70C mark at temperatures around freezing, and that is running near to 60mph most of the mileage.

is this a case of "dumbing down" for want of a better phrase?
I am no expert but always thought oil temperature was the gauge to determine whether the engine was at optimum temperature or not.
As regards coolant I am sure if the coolant were to overheat then the car would display a message to that effect.

I would bet that there are many people out there without the interest in cars may not even look at the gauge and drive it the same regardless of how hot or cold the oil is.(and probably are fine to be honest)

Similar thinking. I wouldn't be surprised there have been complaints about the temperature being low or different in use. The old, "my temperature gauge was always bang in the middle, something must be wrong" type comments.

I just hope BMW haven't used a 'damped' coolant gauge readout, where in the 'middle' covers a wider range of temperature than many are aware it does.

Personally I like the oil temperature gauge reading the exact temperature, where 100C means 100C.

It is "damped" because since atleast 2004 BMW has been running ECU controlled thermostats that run the engine at different temperatures depending on requirements.

ie it runs hot for economy and runs cooler when power is required.

Most people would freak if they saw the coolant gauge keep changing between say 80C and 108C while they were driving around

Yes can understand it with petrol engines, (one of the reasons an oil temperature gauge can be more useful). I was thinking more for the diesel users, where we are running fixed temperature thermostats. To have an accurate temperature (VW do it on their diesel models), you know exactly how ECT is doing.

An ECT gauge would have been a godsend on the M47/57 engines, where we had (still have) lots of issues with failing thermostats, and many are running low ECT without even knowing. Sometimes only showing up when DPF regenerations fail, or mpg drops off, or both.

Still better than the e90 with no temp gauge.
