Car put itself into.. neutral and turned off?

Hi guys. Still trying to figure out if I did this somehow. Driving in the rain yesterday, at a stop light. Push on the gas pedal, and iDrive pops up that the car is in neutral and I need to prevent it from rolling away. I try putting it into drive, no dice. After a few seconds of confusion I realize the engine isn't even on, so I put it in park, start it - cranks a little longer than normal, then I put it in drive and take off.

The really odd thing here (except.. the whole thing), is that the neutral warning message ONLY appears if the car is in neutral and a door is opened. I tested once I was home by putting it in neutral and letting of the brake, no warnings etc. as soon as I open the door, the message appeared.

So.. what the hell. Oil change is due soon, so I will ask them to look at it. Not sure if any codes were stored (all clear except the oil change), but I did run the teleservice call hoping it might transmit something useful.

Anyone out there have any drivetrain malfunctions? I'm wondering if something got too wet.

No CELs/etc from the Dinan, super weird. Guess I'll see what the dealer says.

Your engine stalled for some reason. When this happens, the transmission goes into neutral.

Do you have it set to auto start/stop? It may have thought that it needed to shut off after a long time or other situation.

PS: My G30 is just 3 days old so I'm still learning its quirks. So different than the F10 in many ways.

ASS wouldn't put the car into neutral as it won't switch off depending on length of time. As others have said likely to be that the car stalled for some reason. Will be interesting to hear what the dealer finds out.

G30 is also super quiet and very easy to switch on/off engine assuming the opposite.

Interesting, the stall makes sense, however odd. Would explain the longer than normal crank time at next start as well. ASS is always off.

Any more info on this? I came across this thread today via Google. My 2019 M5 Competition did the same thing on me today. I was stopped at a stop light and then when the light turned green I noticed that I wasn't moving when I hit the gas as the car had somehow slipped into neutral; no I hadn't moved the gear selector. Then I realized that the engine wasn't on and I had to restart it to put it into drive before I was able to drive again.

This happened three times today, apparently randomly at three different lights. Happily the car restarted just fine each time and aside from being honked angrily by the guy driving behind me while I restarted the car there was nothing bad that happened as a result and I did get home OK.

I just had my 2000km break-in service 2 weeks ago and the car checked out just fine then. Its been driving absolutely great otherwise, as I would have expected for a factory new 2019 M5.

I have obviously booked it in for BMW to take a look at; I texted my service guy who thinks it is a software thing but apparently this has happened before to X5s:

https://repairpal.com/recall/16V919000

but he has not heard of this happening before to the M5.

Nada; it only occurred once for me.

A nice aspect of the 530e is that it has NO ASS. Seems old fashioned. Creeps at lights and stop signs unless I keep my foot on the brake (or use autohold).

Did they find out what was the actual problem? It happened to me today, new F90 M5 competition did my 2000km service just last week. I didn't happen before the service. And im hoping its just a one off.. But if it happens again i ll most probably get it checked as well.

Resurrecting this thread again as I have seen this happen multiple times with my 2019 recently. ASS stops vehicle at red light and idrive shifts to neutral unexpectedly.
