They may or may not put the new 50i engine in the M550 this year, but it will not be an LCI. |

I doubt you've ever had a V6 engine in your BMW as they've never made one into production . They make them but only to prove that the straight 6 is the best formula for smoothness. The V6 configuration doesn't come close.

it is a silent update in July 2019 for 5 series. B58 engine is getting a bump with TU to 335HP adn 550 gets a TU engine at 523HP plus some electronics (???). they call it MY 2020 5 series update
But the real LCI for 5 series is scheduled for July 2020 |

according to this article - they are just putting updated version TU1 of the engine in all the models. Yes for 540 output stays the same 335, but for 440 increases from 320 to 335. Old version had high tune potential of 355HP as seen in X3 M40 and MPPSK for 540. New version has the high tune potential of 382HP as in M340 and Z4 M40. And hopefully at some point MPPSK for 540 after they figure out the exhaust legislation |

The engine Ilyam5 is referring to is the B58B30M1. The M1 puts out 335bhp and 369 lb-ft torque. Its max hp is available beginning at a slightly lower rpm. This is the engine co-developed with Toyota and will appear in the new Supra as well as the M340i. Z4, etc. in EU where emissions requirements are more stringent. This is what is expected for the 540i worldwide. However, this same engine in the new 740i LCI has 335bhp and 330 lb-ft torque so its anyone's guess if power will change when used in a 540i.
It's possible, though unlikely, BMW will also use the B58B30O1 382bhp version as used in the M340i and Z4 in some markets including NA. We should learn more shortly, by mid May, when order slots open for dealers.

According to BMW the M340i will get 374hp (275kW) here in the UK where we are under EU emissions regulations. I agree it is unlikely that we will see that in the 540i, especially as the "40i" engine in both the new 7 series and X5 are the less powerful iterations - that would not make sense. It looks like BMW are only using the more powerful 40i engine in the M-lite range of cars, but where the model has a more powerful version available (M550i, L760i, X5 50i) there is no need for a more powerful 40i. |
