Do you have an ODB adapter? You can get one cheap at any auto parts store. There are plenty of apps that will tell you what the error code is and clear it.

I don't have the adaptor. I have to bring car to replace the climate control system soon and was wondering if I can just wait until then.

It could be something as simple as a loose gas cap. That's a very common reason for the check engine light to come on - regardless of vehicle brand.

Doesn't the car tell you in Car Status in Control Display under „My Car"?

If you press the i at the top of display screen, it should take you directly to a screen that shows what the warnings are. Does that say anything?

Weird thing is there is no "i" or anything on the screen. So I am not sure...

Just go to your favorite auto parts store and buy a $20 ODB adapter. Those will tell you everything coming directly from the car's diagnostic port.

I bet you a beer that your lower active grille shutter is stuck in the open position. This in turn will trigger a check engine light.

Take the car back to the dealer. That is what the warranty is for.

I will take it to the dealer as they have to replace my climate control screen (on back order at the moment).

The active grill shutters are still in the shut position. I checked that too. Perhaps maybe the mechanism is broken. In Canada, we did have a lot of snow and it was -20 Celsius for quite sometime, perhaps the shutters were iced shut and when the car tried to open them, the mechanism broke??

In my view, it appears the active grill shutters have a lot of issues being broken. Perhaps BMW should not use them anymore lol.

Could either be the shutters or a sensor of some sort.

Sorry to hear about the HVAC touch screen. Here in the US we don't get the 4-zone climate control (reserved for the 7 series). That touch panel looks nice but seems problematic. I like the standard climate controls with LED displays and physical buttons for basic ventilation airflow functions, etc.

Good luck and let us know how your service dealer goes.

I'd check your coolant as well. This light came on when my coolant levels were low - and no other message in the idrive...

There's another thread here somewhere about coolant issues; basically just topping up the water/antifreeze levels

If your coolant level is low you will get a coolant level warning message not a check engine light...

I will bring my car in in about 2-3 weeks. My service advisor said it's not a problem to keep driving it so long as engine light doesn't blink or is red in colour.

It can get there quickly though. Can they arrange you a loaner at least??

They did ask if I wanted to come I. And drop car off. I suppose they will give me a loaner. But I want to wait for my climate control screen to come in so I don't have to bring it in twice.

So I brought my car in for service regarding the engine light and was told that because I drive relatively short distances everyday to and from work (~9km each way), the car hasn't warmed up to burn up all the oil or fuel in the cylinders. I am pretty sure this is what my service adviser said as I am not to technologically savvy.

He stated that I need to drive the car every month aggressively for about 50km.

I find it weird how this is a problem for my car as my other cars never really had this issue come up :S

I think you need a new service advisor.

I just had this happen to me, check engine light came on, no errors or concerns noted in the "iDrive system". My car gets driven 60 miles each day to work. Mines going in Monday, hopefully I get a better answer than what you got 🙄

Can you get it in writing and offer it up to the cop who pulls you over?
