US map update

Got a notice last night of map update available while pulling into garage. I opted to begin on the next startup - have driven car for 15 plus minutes and still states loading. How long does it take and does cat need to be in running mode to complete download?

Where do you download US map updates from for USB update?

I had a message on my Nav screen to download. It did not require to load to USB first.

The message on your Mac screen would have been an it's update ) a small one)
Login to the bmw connected drive website to download the usb updates. These are quite large for example the Western Europe one is around 30gb in size so you will require a 64gb usb drive to copy to.
Your login should have been provided to you when you picked up the car from new.

The OTA (over the air) updates are regional...and are available only when a region has been updated. So if someone in Virginia got an OTA update message...it doesn't mean that someone in the Texas, North Dakota, Maine, or Oregon will have an available update, too. Don't confuse the OTA map updates with the entire North America map updates

OTA map updates are supposed to be available for MY16 and forward n (ie iDrive 5 or iDrive 6, etc.)
You get OTA updates for only one selected region. You select a region by logging into your BMW ConnectedDrive account and clicking My services > Map update. BTW, there's a FAQ section on the Map update page which may be useful.
Map updates are only sent when it is determined that there has been a “significant” change for your selected region. In other words, we won’t get every update. They’re also rolled-out over time, so we won’t get updates at the same time.
Updated maps for your selected region will be automatically sent to your car, however you will be prompted to install the update. If you haven’t been prompted to install a regional update, you haven’t received one.
BMW does not have a way to force or push an OTA map download.
The “Road Map NORTH AMERICA EVO” map version that you see listed in iDrive’s “Navigation Software Version” page is the base map version.
Dealers can update the base map (for all regions) during the “free” three year period – but it’s not free! It’s supposed to cost $30 or $40. Some dealers may charge for service time as well.

Question: the connected drive site lets me change the region. Can one change the region to get an update on an adjoining region and then just change it back? Is that a way to get updates to more than just one's own region?

NO you can't, I have just had my Maps updated too 2019-2, on my new M5 C it showed 2018-4!!! miles out of date, on connected drive i did not as you seem to have an option to update via USB, this is missing and should be there underneath "Auto updates", mine as yours just showed regions, so you need to contact your local dealer explaining the fault and ask them to update maps for you.
My fault I D no: i lodged with Connected Drive is still unanswered!!!!
