From what I understand the 540 will have the same engine as the MY2019 540.The 550 should be getting the 850 engine for the MY2020.

Where did you get this info?

Rumor has it MY2020 540 gets the newer M1 version of the B58. Same HP, a bit more torque.

LCI is supposedly MY2021. Updated look, idrive 7.

Dealership has agreed on the M550 getting the 523/553 engine but no info on the 540

I agree the refresh is a 2021 model but would be interesting if the 540 did get more torque.I just didn’t see the MY 2020 740 get any improvements on its B58.
On a lighter note the MY2020 740 B58 will most certainly breathe better with the low key gigantic grills.

MY2020 7 series did get the M1 version of the B58. Maybe no torque increase over M0 but BMW likes the M1 version because it's supposedly less costly to produce and has a bit more room for power improvement. Toyota was heavily involved in the M1 improvements as part of the Supra project.

apparently 2020 5 series will get new motors across the entire line, 540 and m550i.

2021 is the LCI.
