Rear spoiler arrived today happy with the quality but no tape attached and not sure where to place it.

Fitment is very good seems flush front back and most importantly the two side edges.

It has a 1mm ridge around the edge that is 3mm thick and I'm trying to decide should the tape go on the edge only..the depression central area only or both areas which would seem strange as the central area wouldn't stick as well as the raised edges of I did that?

I'm guessing central area which is 25mm thick approx should be filled with 2mm tape?

Any advise image below

Also what tape to use? Do I need 2mm or 3mm tape and 3M or other brand

I don't want to glue it on.

What experiences have you all had?

I bought a $50 spoiler on ebay and used the tape that came with it. Make sure you use adhesive promoter. 3m tape would be best, but what's nice about this is if it comes off, it's easy to reapply.

Sorry, can't help you as to where to place the tape but I ordered the painted M Performance rear spoiler from IND-Distribution and I plan to mount it with Scotch-Mount™ Extreme Double-Sided Mounting Tape. I watched a few installation tech review it highly.

3M Automotive Tape will do the trick:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

In terms of where or how to tape, without seeing it in hand, my advice is to use your own judgement and go with your gut feeling. It can be removed after with some fishing line if you want a re-do. My advice is to apply the tape where you think would work best, put the spoiler in place but don't push down too hard if at all. Inspect it all around, if you are happy, put some weight on it for a few minutes and done. If you aren't happy and want to re-apply the tape in a different place, it should come right off if you haven't pushed down on it. Also apply the tape to it lightly, maybe just a soft press on the ends of the tape to keep it in place. This will also make taking it off the spoiler easier.

Start with no tape and mark off where you want it with painters tape. A small plastic level is also pretty handy. Good luck.

I ended up using 3m 5962 VHB 19mm tape worked great.

Tried a different cheaper automotive tape first and it failed to stay stuck to the spoiler.

One piece of advise is use sandpaper to rough up the area your applying the tape to on the spoiler they can be very smooth or have residue which the tape won't stick to.

I would not advise sandpaper personally. My method to install spoilers is to first thoroughly clean the area with car shampoo, then do an IPA wipedown, and finally, use Dawn dishsoap to clear off any existing wax. Just be VERY careful the dishsoap doesn't go anywhere else as it will ruin your existing wax. After applying the dishsoap, I wipe it all off with a damp microfiber and make sure the surface is bone dry. I've personally used 3M double-sided tape for spoiler installs and it's been perfectly fine. I also use painters tape to apply even pressure across the spoiler. It's crucial to let the car sit in the garage or in the sun and to avoid any and all forms of rain/moisture for the first couple days to ensure the best bond.

Following this method the spoiler I have installed for my own cars as well as for my buddies have been stuck through it all. On my own E90 the spoiler has been stuck for over five years and has seen the worst Canadian winters and heaven knows how many car washes touchless or otherwise.

Yeah I wouldn't advise sandpaper either on the car.

Think you missed the bit where is said on the spoiler surface to rough it up and remove surface overspray etc.

Hi @CnSky - what spoiler was this? Do you have a link please?

I like the gloss black look, and this is nice and subtle.

One thing definitely worth using after having cleaned / wiped down with IPA (both spoiler and car) is 3m Adhesion Promoter.
It works very well, and things stay stuck!
It is used in the automotive industry to do just these jobs.

I installed a carbon fiber spoiler. Used 3M tape and adhesion promoter. The adhesion promoter is crucial especially where I live in Miami.

That looks great!

My buddy cringed when I told him this, but I use acetone to remove wax and other stuff before applying tape or whatever to painted surfaces.

I used a clay bar followed by isopropyl alcohol. Then the 3M adhesion promoter.
