Looking to hear some experiences or impressions for those who have done the S1 Dinan tune. I ordered this part about 10 days ago and it finally shipped. Should be to the shop doing the work this Saturday, so next week is the week for install.

I'm excited and looking to hear some stories for those who have done it. Is it noticeable in all driving modes or just Sport Plus? Is it a smooth increase in power or is it, for lack of better words, "jumpy" or anxious?

I'm not even really an aggressive driver 90% of the time. I deferred to have my car coded to start in Sport Plus because I like comfort for normal driving. I passed on some of the other tuning options that claim more HP because I just want enough to feel it while not compromising the throttle response too much. And of course the warranty staying in tact with Dinan mods.

If you have a minute, I'd love to hear your experience including anything I might want to tell the installer or watch out for.

Thanks,

Joe

I have the stage 1. You can really tell the difference. It woke up the car a little bit more. There's other more aggressive tunes out there but I'm satisfied with dinan. It's a good mixture to add power and proven reliability. I love the tune.

Check out Carbahn. Dinan is not what it used be since Steve Dinan sold it 5-6 years back. All public info. Steve has since started a new shop, Carbahn. Same reliable tech, knowledgeable/experience and warranty offered by Dinan for 30+ years and considerably more HP/TQ. I have it on my 2020 M550i, completely transformed my car. But can't go wrong either way... Good luck!

Thanks, I did check them out and am well aware of the transfer of ownership. Carbahn sells two offerings for more power. One is the actual Dinan Elite 2 referenced here which is a piggy back and the other is some chip that I have no interest in pursuing, If you want the chip, it's $1250, if you want the chip with warranty protection, it's another $1250, so $2500. At least this is how I read it. I'll save the $1,250 for when my CPO is up and either put it towards an extension or my next car.

My Dinan decision is a done deal as it's shipped and I paid for it. There may be a different owner, but the warranty protection is still there.

I have the Dinan Elite v2 on my 2019 M550i.

definitely noticeable! it's not an aggressive tune by any means, but a nice improvement over stock.

Thanks again everyone. I had my Elite v2 installed this morning and am very pleased. I guess I didn't expect such a drastic improvement in comfort mode, but comfort almost feels like the old sport plus and sport plus feels outstanding.

One observation, I waited while they installed it and I was curious as to whether that were going to disconnect the battery per Dinan's install instructions. When I drove off for the first time, I honestly didn't feel anything and it almost felt a little sluggish. I only drove it to work which was 10 minutes from the shop and really nowhere to test it, but form a pedal perspective, I wasn't feeling it. I immediately sent an email with my observations and asked if they disconnected the battery. They said no and it was not necessary as they let the car go to sleep before proceeding and the only reason to disconnect the battery is so the car doesn't wake up in the middle which would throw codes. They said I had no codes and to give it some time and to let it sit locked to the system fully powered down.

I let it sit for two hours and just took it for a spin and it's like night and day from leaving the shop to ride number two. I do think there is something to letting the unit power up from cold for the first time.

Anyway, all good.

Glad you like it - I am very happy with mine. I think Dinan dialed in the right might of power that fits the cars headroom.

Thanks, I agree completely. I just wanted something ready to go when I want it but not make the car itch to jump out of it's skin. I am looking forward to testing it out more.

Joe - who did the install for you, fellow New Englander here. I know BMW Stratham, NH, is an authorized Dinan installer/dealership.

I'm very happy with my dinan as well. Just like what the op said, normal mode is now amazing while sports mode went up a notch.

Bavarian Performance Group in Winchester. Very happy with them. They have done a bunch of them.

Yup, Bavarian installed the Dinan tune on my M550 as well. But that was almost two and half years ago. I pick them after interviewing a total of five local Dinan shops.

Same, I called around as well. At first I thought it would be best to get it done at an actual BMW/Dinan dealer thinking they would know more about the process and the warranty would be less at risk if done by a dealer. I realized quickly that didn't matter and there also were not any BMW Dinan certified dealers convenient to me. My dealer wasn't certified.

I interviewed a performance shop in Waltham as well as Turner Motorsport in Amesbury. The place in Waltham seemed unfamiliar with the product and wanted 3 hours for labor. The process takes less than an hours with meticulous harness zip tying. Turner stopped working on cars a few months ago and is 100% focused on racing.

It was clear Andy at BPG new what he was talking about and was very familiar with the product. I had an appointment for 8:30 Monday morning and was out of there in an hour including Andy walking me through the work that was done and pointing out the harness trail and control unit location. Walked me through the bypass jumper as well which I'll never use. They charged me $250, they need to make some money. I don't think they make anything off the product.
