Hello guys and ladies. In my household we currently have two cars. An SUV for the wife and 520d for myself. I hate tall cars sometimes it seems as if my head is floating when driving the SUV, no sensation of speed etc.
On my own, I like driving everywhere including regular journeys to London (600 miles round trip). I hate processes associated with train journeys buying tickets beforehand and taking tubes and buses for another one hour in London. So I do close to 25,000 miles a year. In my work, please understand I am not trying to boast, we all earn enough to make us upper 10% to 1% of the population but everybody uses small hatchbacks and not necessarily new ones so I stand out like a sore thumb in my humble 520d. Somehow I am conscious of this. Then the experience of a lax chain in my F10 N47 engine is making me wary of putting too much mileage on my G30. I know it is a different engine with no reported issues I have been torn between getting a small hatchback, those small 3 pot 1 Litre one to use to work and blend with the crowd at work (sometimes do 40-100 miles round trip commute) or put the mileage or my diesel 520d. Which one would you advise?

Your car is diesel so putting a mileage won't hurt your budget in fuel cost wise as it would do with gasoline cars and why shy away from driving the best car ever made by BMW
Besides , since we talk about 3 cylinder 3x 330 cl Coca Cola tin box sized engine , you have to rev it higher to get it going whereas in BMW a slight touch on the gas pedal will make the job easier and effortlessly

Keep the 520d and use it everywhere so you'll enjoy it more.
Then in a few years when the LCI comes out, change to a 530d with the same colour, wheels, interior and don't tell anyone |

Interesting thread to perform necromancy on.
I didn't buy my car as a museum showpiece and I think renting a car is idiotic unless absolutely necessary (like when I flew to EU) since rentals are rarely specced as well as my car. I bought it to drive and use. The depreciation curve is brutal no matter if you do or don't drive these cars so you might as well use it as much as possible. It is made to be enjoyed not stared at Well unless you're on a lease... Then you need to be mindful of how much enjoyment you're having... |

My 2016 535d (530d in Europe) competes for the finest car I've ever owned and agree, best from BMW (other than maybe an M2). Same issue. I love it so much but am putting 25,000 miles a year on it. Best excuse, when I can afford it, is to get a second car like a sports car for jollies at the track and take some of the miles off the 535d. No garage space, but the 5-er can probably handle it.
