Telescoping steering wheel malfunction...
For the second time in a few weeks my telescoping and height adjust steering wheel function stopped working and is stuck in the entry/exit position closest to the gauge cluster upon start up. This kind of leaves you with that driving a bus feeling, and it blocks the thru view to some of the gauge cluster. I tried turning the car off then on again but the problem persisted. The first similar event to this was about 2 weeks ago, but the problem resolved itself overnight. This is the first mechanical problem with my 2020, and of course it is quite disappointing that an otherwise perfect vehicle with less that 6000 miles is having a quality issue. The Hawaiian sun can achieve some very hot dash temps when the vehicle is parked. I was not using my sunshade in the windscreen. Heat is the only contributing factor I can think of. I am further concerned that this may be one of those intermittent problems the dealer would be reluctant to fix if the failure can not be repeated at time of service. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Very informative claykin, sincere thanks. Yup- failure of the electronic steering column at higher cabin temperature is probably my exact issue.
So replacement units don't suffer this same fate?? I bet this crap fault would be plenty expensive out of warranty. I will definitely need to get this sorted.

(Reference post since google brings this up as the top post) Hitting the bottom of the wheel with my knee fixed it for a month or so until the issue came back today. I made a service appt at 10am today. Walked away from the car for 3 hours and just got in it to drive to the dealership and now the telescopic function works again -- no force used this time.
And again, no time spent in the sun. This along with the random M1 and M2 settings being drastically different (HUD, speedo height, suspension settings etc.) on startup (randomly) which then revert to what they're supposed to be after turning the car off and on -- Have me worried about the long term ownership of this car... 2020 M5C 19,000 miles |

Great that you got it repaired. My opinion is it's more about a poor design with a plastic worm gear than anything else.

They said they put some kind of grease somewhere in mine and claimed victory. We'll see. Been a month. Got stuck once but barely. I'm not too worried because I know and they know it's a problem. If it continues they will have to fix it.

known issue. My dealer in Vegas has them in stock. I was in and out in a day when they replaced mine.

Is there a bulletin number or something I can reference to politely show that I'm aware it's a widespread, known issue and maybe they should just replace the column?

Just be firm that you're tired of coming back for the same repair and would they please fix the known (maybe not to them, but BMW is aware of it) problem with the steering column.

I explained the issue, that it was the same as last time and explained how I was told it was repaired last time (some kind of lubrication). He immediately said "yes, that's always our first try but it sounds like it didn't work. Let's make sure we have an appointment with a loaner car because this could take a couple days to repair." That sounds like he's preparing for ordering the correct parts, etc. It's under warranty and they are the last ones to repair it, so there shouldn't be any issues. It's unsettling to read some stories on here where vehicles under warranty weren't covered because a previous dealer already repaired something and there's some debate over whether it's covered still. At least this is all the same dealer and within 60-90 days or so.
