Display Key
By accident today, I managed to find Display Keys for sale on eBay.
After my 540i was stolen, I'm left with a really nice display key sat doing nothing and the insurance company don't want it. So, my question is, why do people sell them? What use is a second hand key? And are there any risks in selling one? I can't imagine there would be any risk considering my car was never seen again, so what use a key would be for it baffles me, but i don't want to sell it if people use them for illegal gains... |

They are locked to your VIN. Normal people can't buy a used key off eBay and make it work on their car but a locksmith with special equipment can buy these keys from people and erase/program them for customers and not pay BMW prices. My local stealership wanted to charge me $900 for a Display Key that was missing from the used car they sold me. I bought an OEM one from thebmwminipartstore for $500 and it worked perfectly. I had to send in a photo ID and my registration and they ordered it directly from BMW. I had the key 2 days after I ordered it. bimmer-tech also wanted $900 for the same key.
At least now I have 2 keys for my car and can use the remote parking feature they advertised on the sticker. |

So the VIN is useless unless somebody wants to track down all of the parts of the car...
So putting one on eBay for circa £100 might benefit somebody who wants one... thanks for the info... |
