Rear brake pad wind back app, tool?

Hiya,

I need to change the rear pads on my F90 M5, tried posting in the M5 forums, but no response...

I did the pads on my previous cars, VWs, using the OBDEleven app - placed the car into service mode for lining change, the parking brake would whir... and then I could change the pads, and "reset" the lining change mode.

I assume this is the same for the F90 and G30, but where can I get an app that will allow me to enter lining change mode? I have tried the Bimmerlink app, this has some "EPB service mode"... once I launch the app, the car will say "diagnostic mode" etc on the dash, and flash an error message... but I don't hear any noise from the parking brake. Is this normal?? The app says something like "service mode activated successfully"...

Is there any other app I can try?

Thank you!

The parking brake on a BMW doesn't use the regular caliper, it uses a shoe internal to the brake rotors. Or at least it used to... I honestly haven't done brakes on a recent BMW with the electric parking brake.

So, if I'm right, you won't need to retract it any further than if it's just "off" to replace the pads.

The F90 and G30 have the electronic parking brake, so yes the caliper actuator has to be wound back.

On my F11, I simply removed the motors and followed the wind back sequence.

If you do this on the G30 then you get an error message so it has to be done by via an electronic tool/code reader. I did the same as you on my wifes 2013 model without any issues. Not had to do it yet on my current car

What exactly are you doing in BimmerLink?

You should place the car in diagnosis mode before plugging in.

Press start button three times.

Wait for car chime and diagnosis more on dash.

Turn on airplane mode wait a minute.

Then plug in with airplane mode on.

Check Ethernet setting on iPhone and wait for an IP address to appear.

Then into BimmerLink and select parking brake service mode.

You sure you doing it in the right sequence?

Is this brake service mode in the standard mode or expert mode? I have to do my brakes soon since they just started the squeal when coming to a stop. In the low 40k mile range.

Standard mode … it's one of the main buttons on the Home Screen/landing page once connected.

An easy way to wind it back is to remove the two bolts holding the motor bracket down, and you can hand turn the caliper back in with a 7mm hex, turning clockwise. Once that is done, I was able to just push the calipers in by hand.

I'm about to do this on my car as well, seems pretty simple. Did you run into any error codes like someone mentioned above?

I haven't done a brake job in a decade or two when cars were much simpler. Mind point out what you mean?

Found this video, is this close enough to what we need to do at 4:22?

I did not run into an error when I did this. I was not able to reset the brake sensor though. Someone in another thread showed some information that if the wear sensor is tripped but NOT by the grinding of the sensor that it can only be reset via diagnostic tool.

I just replaced my rear pads on my 2017 540i M-Sport with the blue caliper brakes. All I had to do is to make sure the parking brake was not set and to wind the caliper piston back by turning the piston clockwise while pushing it. You will need a commonly found brake caliper piston tool with an adaptor that has a notch to turn the caliper piston.

I use a similar toolset as this Harbor Freight set and you will need adaptor 8:

Good to know. I bought a scan tool for $160 that will release the parking brake. I'm also going to bleed my brakes in the fall and I like to do all my own maintenance, so having the scan tool seemed well worth the money.

Did you have to replace your rotors or did you get them turned? How many miles?

I had 36,400 miles and the brake sensor triggered a warning that I had 1200 miles left. Didn't need to resurface the rotors, they were above the minimum thickness and the replacement pads were original BMW.

Just completed a rear brake pad and sensor change. I used Bimmerlink or Bimmercode to wind back the rear pistons, but I got an error message on the app, so I'm not sure it worked. All I did was disengage the parking brake. I started with the rear left caliper and pulled off the electric motor to wind back the piston, but I found that I didn't need to do that at all. The piston was easily pushed back with a C-clamp. So I don't know if the app actually wound the pistons back, or there was enough room to switch out pads by just releasing the parking brake. The right rear caliper I just swapped the pads without taking off the electronic motor; I just used the c-clamp to push the piston back.
