BMW M5 vs M550i sales units by year?
Looking at the aftermarket support for M550i (vs M5) there *seems* to be more support (tuning for example) for the M5 than the M550i.
I sort of get that given the fact that the M5 is already a sport tuned sedan and presumably attracts customers intent on performance (and potentially wanting to *improve* performance). But I also wonder about the relative sizes of these two markets. Does anyone know or have access to unit sales by year? I would think, being that it's at a lower price point, that the M550i sells more units, but maybe I'm wrong here? Curious, because if the M550i does have more unit sales (since 2018-ish) then in terms of addressable market size, the M550i market might actually potentially be larger and potentially more lucrative than the M5 market (for mods, tuning, etc.) Thoughts? Anyone know where this data might be available? Or is this something that only a BMW insider might know or be aware of? |

Eyeball test for the US, 2.5-3 to 1. M550 to M5. Probably closer to 3.

Sincerely just curious. I've corresponded with several mod vendors who all make M5 mods but do not explicitly support the M550i, which got me thinking, why not? Is the addressable market for M550i mods somehow smaller? What am I missing? My thought now is: the M5 is the "glamour" mod car. Building mods for the M550i much lower profile in terms of marketing (which is exactly why I bought a M550i and not a M5, frankly). |

I think in the US is more m550i than m5 due to price point but even in Canada they sold more M5/M5c than M550i. I'd see more M5s than M550is. 530i is the go to for most people. After you add the options it's just doesn't make a big difference price wise at that range! Right now brand new 540i fully optioned goes for $100k CAD vs an M5C base $125K to $160k fully optioned. Assuming you can get your hands on any 😂😂😂 M550i being the in between, just doesn't make sense anymore. Used to be less than $100k now with increased taxes in Canada, might as well go for the M5. Also, I think it's more to do with availability these days than anything. Since 530, 540 sell more and share a tonne of parts with m550i, as a manufacturer you would dedicate most of your resources to the ones that sell more. M5/M8 is more of a separate category. |
