coolant leak

My Car has a pretty big leak that isn’t visible when looking inside the engine bay from atop. Both tanks and all hoses are dry. I’ve already replaced my expansion tank to radiator hose previously. I recently used the heater a couple days ago for the first time all year (if that does any good info) and the following morining I entered the vehicle to the “low coolant warning” light. The big expansion tank was completely empty. As I got to work after topping her off that morning, the under carriage guard cover under the engine was completely soaked and leaking coolant around the middle drain cut out. I’ve done some research and saw that the b48 for the f series had a warranty extension for some hose that runs from behind the engine up under the intake manifold. Being that I can’t see any leaks from looking in, I have to assume it’s one of those hoses? Tried to get my phone in there somehow but just can’t see any leaks, besides looking from underneath the car and seeing that the guard is soaked in the middle dripping through… vehicle doesn’t leak when it’s cold, only when vehicle is hot. It’s been parked and will be going to the indy shop on wed (very well reputable, used to take my f30 for service). Any ideas?

It's leaking under pressure, that's why it leaks when hot. Probably a turbo coolant line, faulty thermostat (common) staying closed, maybe the water pump. How many miles?

Indy should be able to see once the guard is off.

56k miles. Yup, leaking under pressure. I’ll keep you updated tomorrow when they give me a diagnosis!

Definitely do post back. Always curious what the issue is. 56k "could" be the water pump, but I am going with thermostat. If t-stat, do your homework. On my car they extended the warranty to 15 years/150k miles.

Welp, my oil filter housing assembly is what’s leaking. That, and two other hoses need to be replaced as well. Shop did pressure test and found main leak from OFH and small leaks from the other hoses(like $70 for the hoses). Sadly, I have to cough up $2137 for this job lol. $180 labor rate x 9hrs. Would explain why it busted after using the heater the day before. SMH, oh well. This machine is my dream but these maintenance costs are ridiculous!

This makes me more convinced that an extended warranty is a good idea if I’m keeping this car long term, which I’m convinced more and more that I’d like to.

Wow, that sucks. Haven’t heard this one to the best of my knowledge. $2,000 seems like a lot and it is out of pocket, but I honestly think just about any leak whether it be coolant hoses or something like this is going to $2,000. It’s almost like the minimum for a repair given the labor it takes to take crap apart to get at the root problem.

I also am glad I got the post CPO warranty.

Glad you still love the car. BMWs sure do come with a love hate relationship. The alternative is to drive a Japanese car, no thank you.

Sounds like you have a good indie.
