Oil type
Currently I'm running bmw full synthetic 0w30 oil recommended by BMW. I'm thinking of changing to perhaps 5w50 redline. What are your thoughts on changing this to heavier weight oil....

BMW spend billions developing their engines, and determining the fluids that are required?
Why would you potentially change the recommendations based on some potential whim or anecdotal evidence? These guys have access to serious test equipment to measure the oil, test the engine for wear and efficiency. Engines are made with such tight tolerances nowadays, that the incorrect viscosity could either not lubricate certain components correctly or breakdown as they are too thin. |

Yes they also spent billions and made 10w60 standard on E60 M5 which caused rod bearing problems and all the other issues. Which Later they changed oil weight and said it's ok to use lighter weight.
From what I read and talking to people that did it they noticed no oil Consumption. Since the engine are "known to from oil" changing to heavier weight reduces that. I had fully built m5 that was done by Troy Jeup and strongly recommend using 5w50 redline. Look him up on IG you see his work. |
