Now can you imagine what AWD can do to a full M car? Imagine how fast the M550 can take a corner with power going to ALL 4 wheels.

I'm so delighted that we are seeing an introduction to M cars having AWD. First with the excellent job BMW did to the XM series. I hope they follow suit with the full-fledged M series from the M2 to the M8 as an option in all the next generations.

"456 hp at 5,500 rpm and peak torque of 480 lb-ft from just 1,800 rpm, propelling the BMW M550i xDrive Sedan from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds"

I am sure it will be right around the new 600+hp E63S, which is 0-60 in 3.3sec.

Does x-drive offer the ability to send all/majority of power to rear wheels in certain settings? Never driven an AWD sports/powerful car, and would hate to lose the ability to push out the back end (even if it's a slower way to get around a corner).

Seriously considering this car after the F80.

Is a manual trans offered?

Agree. A tick above 3. No way it's breaking 3 from the factory. It's not a Tesla.

The upcoming E63 has a "Drift" mode specifically designed to let the ass end out. From the sounds of it, the new M5 is going to have a similar 'dynamic' AWD system that lets you cut loose as well (presumably).

$72k is pretty steep but considering thats where the competition is priced I am not surprised. I'm scared to see the final price after adding all the options in the configurator when ever that becomes availabe.

Consider this about 4 years ago Dec 2012 I got a 2013 550xi Starting MSRP was $64,700 + $2,900 for m-sport = $67,600.

Final MSRP was $77,945 and I considered it to be fully loaded.

As I expected the M550 is priced awfully steep, but if that's what the market dictates I suppose it's fine. It seems that the S6 and E43 are priced in the same ballpark.

For me personally, it's just difficult to spend $80-85K on a 5-series that isn't an ///M5. And yes I know it starts around $73K, but with a couple routine packages it'll get expensive quickly.

I think it's a pretty foregone conclusion based on what M leaders have said publicly and with HP and Torque having reached ridiculous heights lol!

It will...I'd want it pretty loaded up and with even a decent residual, we'd be looking at $900++ for lease.

I've owned E39 540, X6 50i and E92 M3's, so I know what its like to own a V8. They are wonderful engines.

But with the 540i fast as it is, that might be the sweet spot in value and performance. If you call $70k value lol!

I thought the original press release listed a bunch of stuff, for some reason I remember LED lights (basic ones I think) being standard, premium sound, leather, ... a lot of things that aren't standard in the 530i or even 540i. M Sport is obviously in the price too, so for $72,800 I think you are getting a lot already. options will obviously still take it over $80K if you get out of hand (premium leather, dash leather, another upgrade to sound), it seems like lots of last gen tech will be standard and 7 series options might be available now.

M5s start at $94k.

The M550i is priced just about right considering a 540i is at $60k.

Wow....
Real HP is probably underestimated- much like the 340/440i

More likely around 480-500. Plus the X-drive adds about .2 sec so 4.1 for comparison to current M5 that does not get X-drive.

Depends what's standard. However it looks like a good value to me. This car delivers F10 M5 beating acceleration, probably has over 500 real hp. and has a base price of $72k vs an F10 M5 base price of $95k and a G30 base price that will likely be close to $100k. That's a big difference.

When we bought our 2013 M5s the price difference to 550i when comparably equipped was only about $20k. Now it might be bigger.

I think I am going to order an M550 XDrive to replace my wife's C300 (which was always a temporary car). Then I will wait and see how E63 or M5 fare later on, and maybe upgrade later kind of like what I did with the F10. Will make final decision when I go to Detroit next week.

I think there needs to be a caveat to the statement made in the original post. It should say "fastest 0-60", obviously due to the X-drive.

The E60 M5 will probably still out accelerate it on the highway, such as in a passing situation. Also when they claimed the E60 M5 the fastest production sedan, it was mainly due to the fact it could hit 200+ MPH with the limiter removed. The E60 M5 had a lot better HP/weight ratio, but like the F10 M5, wastes a lot of time as it struggles for traction from a stop due to its 2wd configuration.

This will be a fast car no doubt, but let's keep things in perspective.

Exactly. Let's keep things in perspective people.

You all should know that a bone stock 4,500lbs Audi RS7 can do a 0-60 in 3.5s or less.

Also here's the real question of the day. What are the confirmed curb weight figures for the new M550i?

This matters as I personally do not believe that M Division is going to be able to shave any significant weight compared to the F10 due to the AWD. Since I believe that M will implement some sort of traditional AWD system for the F90 M5 (even though it will probably be configurable by the driver) the overall weight of the car will not decrease. I am willing to bet my own M5 that M Division will make it a proud fact to the public that they were able to add an AWD system to the F90 M5 and keep the weight of the car the same as the F10 M5 but that means we're going to end up with another 4,400lbs sedan, and for me is unacceptable.

Yes, I know the 2018 Porsche Panamera weighs even more than the F10 M5 and is able to set a Nurburgring time faster than the Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio, but that is owing to the new Panamera's NASA-like computer system with over 100 million lines of code. The next M5 isn't going to have anything as sophisticated even though it'll have AWD. No, the F90 M5 should be AWD and at least 250lbs lighter than the F10 M5 too. That'll really put it ahead of the competition, but I know this is not going to happen, as the next M5 is also going to be laden with computers and modules weighing it down. They would have to get seriously drastic with the weight reduction. I still argue that it should at the very least get an CF roof, trunk, hood and CF for all 4 doors. That could save almost 100lbs right there.

Anyways, just thought I'd express my pre-disappointment with the next M5 even though it's not out yet. Lol!

The M550i should've been offered with optional RWD. M5 needs optional RWD too. If no RWD, I'm getting a pre-owned F10 M5

It was the E39 M5 that was the fastest production sedan in the world. It was this commercial and seen one in person on the German Autobahn that sold me the car!!!
