1200 Mile Break-in
As stated in the owners manual, how many waited for the 1200 mile mark to hammer it? I would imagine anyone test driving these at the dealer do several WOT blasts...I know I did....well...not to mine when I took delivery.

I broke mine in following the manuals rules. Since I have a PHEV I took a very long road trip to do it as quickly as possible at highway cruising speeds...
I also ordered my car to minimize the chance it was beat up by test drivers |

In reality, I am sure it doesn't matter all that much. I'm sure people who did ED, for instance, would be hammering their cars pretty hard on the autobahn without issues long term... |

My car is a 2018. I am looking at moving to a BEV in 2023 or 2024. Currently eyeing the IX, the I4 (if BMW ever modifies the front), the Lucid Air Pure, and the Ford Mustang. I actually put down a refundable deposit on the Lucid Air Pure. By the time I am ready to replace my 530e, I figure that there will be plenty of choices. But I would be looking for both performance and range so that will substantially shrink the choice list. |

This is what I have done on the last four new cars I have owned. They all made more power than book on the Dyno and used minimal oil. Get it off the delivery truck / forecourt and drive it normally till warm. Do the ring seat procedure (half throttle upto 2/3 available rpm then lift of and run down. Repeat several times.) Then drive it like a regular person upto 1200 miles (no slamming it off the limiter) before you kick it's face in. That's it.

With respect to the recommended oil change at 10,000 miles or a year....I don't think so. I'll probably do the first one at 3000. Thoughts on oil changes? |

If you are going to keep the car for a long time and try to get big milage out of it why not. The big picture is not many German cars at 200'000 miles get taken off the road due to not having their oil changed at half intervals.

Personally, I go with Liqui Moli 5W-30 and I do a flush and ceratec treatment at regular intervals.

My BMW sales guy told me there was no breakin period and No I never read the manual so I am thankful to find out. I am only at 100 miles and have done nothing stupid but I am going to stay in comfort mode and behave for another 1000 miles and will be like Joe and change oil every 5000 miles.

The first thing we would do is Max Out the engine during its "break in stage". That would mean several Full Throttle inputs at 19,600 Ft Lbs of Torque per engine, x4 of them hanging off the wing. LOL |

I do 10K mile changes, but I will likely sell my car before 130K miles. So I have been told that’s not long enough to matter |

I happenedd to just speak w my BMW sales advisor and he said BMW states that only the M5 and other M cars have the 1200 mile break in and a 1200 mile brak in service. The M550I does not. Curious what you all think.

[QUOTE=HerkHealer;28603972]FWIW, I've changed numerous C-130 Acft engines during my Military Career.

All 5-Series cars specify the 1200 mile break in service, but only the true M cars like the M5 require the 1200 mile oil service.

Several sources already suggest the future M5/M550 will be a Hybrid. Last of the Internal Combustion Engines may be here.......NOW. |

I had the pleasure of going to the factory in MI to watch our last car model be made. After the car was built, it was driven off the line, gassed and driven onto a dyno. The driver then proceeded to mash the loud pedal for about a minute!
