Active lane control assistant and automatic lane changes?
Hi
I got my G31 last week and it's a great car. I have the Driving assistant plus (Driving assistant plus II in the US) package and for boring empty highway/interstate type driving it's nice to have the car do most driving for you. In the manual (both printed and online versions) it also says that it shall be capable of lane changes by keeping the turn signal pressed. Has anyone got that to work? Or is a SW update necesssary for it to be enabled? (Yeah yeah, spare me the "drive the car yourself" comments) |

be interested in this as I'm getting my G30 in about a months time.
I assume the lane you were moving into was clear and that the sensors hadn't detected a car there and therefore decided not to move. I haven't seen any video demos about this feature. |

Weird. I didn't realise it could do this. And how do you 'keep the turn signal pressed'? This turn signal works traditionally - like gets notched up or down and then releases when the steering comes back etc.
I've found it just disengages the active steering as soon as you signal. |

I've had a look at the technical docs on this website and found this, is this what you are referring to?
24.1.3.Lanechange Foralanechangetobeascomfortableaspossible ,theActiveLaneKeepingAssistantandTrafficJa m AssistantareputsilentlyintoStandbymodewhen theturnindicatorisactivatedandreactivatesit self automaticallyoncetheturnindicatorisbackini tsinitialpositionandalanechangehasoccu rred Of course as this is documentation for the U.S. I wouldn't be at all surprised if a feature is not available there given the history of some enhancements. (thinking adaptive headlights here as an example) |

The wording suggests it is not an auto change but that the auto lane assist disengages while you change lanes. Then comes back on after that. This is true but it takes a few seconds in my experience before he car recalibrates to the new lane.

Zigmund, yes that's what mine does too.
But both my printed manual and the drivers guide app (with my vin entered) says that it should be possible to get an automatic lane change. Unfortunately they are both in swedish... But please check yours, it's right at the end of the driving assist chapters before the parking assist. Picture from swedish manual hopefully attached. I've tried finding a language setting for the drivers guide app so I get it in English and can do a screenshot. But it seems stuck in swedish. |

wonder in that case if it is a feature that got pulled at the last moment but got left in the manual. maybe newer firmware to cater for?
just a guess. I think a question for your dealer who could forward to bmw technical if necessary. |

AP, From what I've heard I think it's new functionality that is just entering production. Checking with dealer about SW update possibility.
Just curious if anyone have gotten it to work. |

be interested in the answer.
also curious how many updates to the istep software there have been since launch. I would think the more changes, then that suggests more things that had to be fixed. |

This feature is technically ready in G30, but what my car dealer told me is that it is currently disabled in Europe due to how current law restricts such mechanism, and a validation of the system must be completed first. They told me that as soon as it can be enabled legally, they will be able to activate it on any g30 with driving assistant plus.
So it might be the same situation for the US : BMW need to have an agreement to use it on public roads. |

Interesting. Will try it tomorrow just to check. To confirm it seems to suggest not going past the resistance point...

Anyway, looking forward to when it can be activated. Hope such a sw update brings better performance for the current lane keeping system as well, it sometimes behaves like it's drunk, going from one side of the lane to the other and back, turning a little bit too late, etc. All on well marked roads with no or very light traffic and in daylight. |

Forgot to update. Yes I tried all combinations I could think of but doesn't do it.
I suspect Bmw have left it off coz at least one person has died using this feature on a tesla... |

I have read somewhere that the Mercedes E class also has this capability; but that in Europe it is also not activated because of legal restrictions...

I just tried online with the BMW "Genius" and they couldn't tell me and said my retailer would know.
I found a product library document for BMW Ireland in March and it stated expected to be available from July 2017. My car is being built right now (painted today ) so hoping this is enabled. Whether I use it not once I get it , who knows, but I'd like to know I've got everything. |

further to this, just chatted to a BMW "Genius" and I quote
"I can confirm that Lane Change Assistant is available for the 5 Series, as part of option 5AT Driving Assistant Plus and is only available for cars built from Week 27, July 2017. This is the week commencing from the 3rd of July." So I'll have it on my 540 as it was built in week 28. as you mentioned originally, whether I'll use it is another matter - I'm quite sure I'm capable of changing lanes on the motorway myself but will be interesting to see how it works none the less.
