2019 M550 Dyno Result BM3 Stage 1

Pleased and disappointed at the same time.

One number makes sense, the other… would be nice but just doesn’t make sense.

Mustang dyno so WTQ really doesn’t make sense.

WHP 516 run #2, WTQ 679 runs #1 & #3

BM3 Stage 1, no other modifications.

The shop was clean, staff was professional but obviously something is “off”. I need the actual dyno file, maybe ProTuningFreaks can analyze the data.

Did you do a baseline run before you tuned it?

What does your butt Dino say? Do you think the tune added a lot more power??

I have a 2018 - essentially the same engine set up that you have - I have held off on doing a tune because of warranty issues but I’m always interested to hear what other people have found after turning the car if they felt it was worth the money.

Thank you for sharing; you should check your baseline for a better idea of the gains.

I must be missing something because I'm not sure why you're disappointed. Going by published factory specs, 456 hp at the flywheel translates to about 390 hp at the rear wheels. PTF advertises a 19% hp gain for BM3 Stage 1 93 octane, so your wheel horsepower should be expected around 460. You got 516.

For torque, published factory spec of 480 ft-lb flywheel is about 410 at the wheels. PTF advertises a 27% gain or 518 expected. You got 679.

We all know that BMW underrates their engines so those stock numbers are certainly low. Even allowing for that, it sure looks to me like you got a winner there.

Did you do data logging during the dyno runs?

I would be ecstatic if I thought the numbers were correct. Doesn’t make sense to me. I feel like 679 is way more than it should be. If it is, awesome but I doubt it. I found another shop with a Dynocom dyno, never heard of that. Seems like there’s no shops in the Connecticut area with an AWD dynojet.

No datalog, had to watch from the “viewing room”

Today is Friday the 13th... don't be scaring me with the Dyno graph like this!

Agreed something is wrong. Bm3 has some of the best OTS tunes on the market - so I'm a bit confused.

Your max torque of 679 is at 3,000 RPM!

Also mustang dynos read a good 10 to 15% lower. I would reach out to bm3 send them the graph and ask them about that torque curve.

The car pulls hard and feels smooth all the way through the powerband. It feels like the typical BM3 tune meaning smooth and more power. I had the N20 tune on my 528 and it was smooth and the power increased. Of course the power of each is tiny bit different. My son just got his first Bimmer, 528… I test drove it and couldn’t believe I used to drive one.

My other option is in Massachusetts on a dynocom which I learned is called a dynoqueen due to inflated numbers. So heartbreaker or dynoqueen but dynojet in the area 🤷🏼‍♂️ maybe I’ll make the trip to Kies and be done with it.

You don't have a before and after so it's all guess work. If I was in your shoes I would get a dragy and set a 60-130. You can then compare the times to all the other stage 1 tuned TU2 cars and see if you are on or off the pace.

gears are torque multipliers.

iirc the gear closest to a multiplier of x1 is 5th gear

looks like this was done in 3rd gear

if you dyno on 2nd gear you will get even more torque

That makes sense. I’ve been meaning to follow up and ask if there is a standard gear (M550 group) which we all use to generate apples to apples comparisons. Dyno type is still an impact but I’m looking to elimate as many variables as possible.

I’d expect the following settings for dyno runs based on what I know this far:

Traction control off
Sport mode engine
Sport mode transmission using manual option in 5th gear? I just started searching and found 6th is 1:1 but why I found did not specifically state the M550i, just the basic 5 series. Do all G30’s share the same 8 gear transmission?

Is this the norm?

my apologies just looked at the specs
1:1 torque multiplier is 6th gear

to me it looks like 99% of people have no idea about this.
the tuner can trick you so easily by running in 1st - 5th gear and give you amazing results lol

EDIT: i think that includes me
do i need to multiple the final drive of 2.813 to the gear or not lol

so there you go.

let me do some read on this i also want to know

basically - dyno charts are meaningless without knowing the gear it was in, and the transmission torque multiplication ratio

Agreed but… I was slightly concerned about flashing the tune to begin with due to some connectivity issues when flashing the N20. When I flashed this tune, it completed the flash, read successful and then started all over again. Idk if that’s typical of the initial flash but I didn’t want to flash back to stock and then back to the tune while on the dyno. If their wifi is sketchy or any other anomalies occur, I’m stuck.

I’ll send the ProTuning guys an email asking which gear they dyno in for advertised results.

Thanks for researching this, it’s making the most sense so far.

i'm not sure that they will remember accurately.

they dyno so many cars, so many different people around, etc -

but worth asking, just don't take it as fact

They got back to me this morning, 4th gear… makes no sense to me.

Too bad we don’t know how BMW does it.

there are many standards to measure HP at the crank, many ways to dyno at the wheel, every dyno is different on how they measure AND CALCULATE things (your chart is not all measured, one of the 2 (hp/tq) is usually calculated from the other.

but it doesn't matter how BMW does it.

what matters is your car dyno chart before and after using same gear and same dyno - that compares apples with apples.
