Let's see G30 is 1.2" longer, 0.3" wider, and 0.6" taller than the F10. That's a big increase in size. Good for the back seat passengers for sure, as even the wheel base has been increased by 0.2" but I am not looking for a bigger car than the F10. 1.2" increase in length is significant as well as the 0.6" increase in height. There's just no hiding the fact that the G30 is a BIG car. How big you might be wondering, well here are some comparisons

G30 5-Series:

- Length: 194.6"
- Height: 58.2"
- Width: 73.5"

F01 7-Series (Standard Wheel Base Version):

- Length: 199.7"
- Height: 58.2"
- Width: 74.9"

E65 7-Series (Standard Wheel Base Version):

- Length: 198.4"
- Height: 58.7"
- Width: 74.9"

2017 W213 Mecedes E-Class:

- Length: 193.8"
- Height: 57.8"
- Width: 72.9"

Second, the weight comparison.

Based off of the info on BMWUSA.com, the F10 535i has a U.S. curb weight of 3,957lbs. While according to today's info the G30 540i has a U.S. curb weight of 3,847lbs. This corresponds to a 110lbs weight reduction from two directly comparable models, the BMW 535i and 540i. This is a pretty good reduction in weight, but I was hoping for more honestly. However based on this information I just don't see how ///M Division is going to be able to knock off more than another 100lbs for the next M5. Losing weight is hard, and with all of this new tech inside of the 5-Series that's going to make it even harder for the next M5 to drop pounds. Owing to this new information today, I predict that we won't see any more than a 250lbs weight drop from the F10 M5 to the F90 (G80) M5. Which by the way the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V already weighs 250lbs less than the F10 M5 today. Granted the CTS-V doesn't have a lot of the fancy tech that BMW has though.

http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx

In the end, I like the new G30 5-Series, but I was hoping for more progress in terms of weight reduction. I'm not sure if we're ever going to get there if they keep making the car bigger and adding more technological features, but hey thanks to Tesla and their self driving cars, it's what people want these days, and nobody seems to care that the Model S weighs over 4,900lbs.

Let's compare some German weight data about the G30 VS the F10 just to have the same standard of measuring (Unladen EU with 90% full tank and 68kg driver and 7 kg luggage)

F10 535i: 1760kg or 3880 lbs. G30 540i: 1670kg or 3682 lbs
Difference: 90 kg or 198 lbs.

F10 520d: 1695 kg or 3737lbs. G30 520d: 1615 kg or 3560 lbs
Difference: 80 kg or 176 lbs.

VS Mercedes Latest E Class:
Mercedes E 200D: 1680 kg or 3704 lbs. Heavier by 65 kg or 143 lbs.

Another weight comparo of the 5er and E class (equivalent models)

530i: 1615kg or 3560 lbs. E300: 1655 kg or 3649 lbs. Difference: 40kg or 88lbs.

540i XDrive (Mercedes only has 4matic for this category): 1735kg or 3825lbs. E400 4Matic: 1820 kg or 4012 lbs. Difference: 80kg or 176lbs.

VS Jaguar XF (made of Aluminium!!)
520d: 1615kg or 3560lbs. XF 2.0d: 1585kg or 3494 lbs. Difference: 30kg or 66lbs lighter for the Jaguar.

540i: 1670kg or 3682 lbs. XF 35t: 1710kg or 3770lbs. Difference: 40kg or 88lbs lighter for the BMW.

540i X Drive: 1735kg or 3825lbs. XF 35t AWD: 1760kg or 3880lbs. Difference 25kg or 55lbs lighter for the BMW.

The G30 is the leader in its class in low weight (comparable to the Jaguar XF), at least until the new Audi A6 arrives...

This blows the e class out of the water in terms of looks. More serious interior as well, but that's dealers choice.

Between the wheels the side profile of the f10 is superior mainly bc of that chrome hockey blade. The front the G is nicer though. The back is a wash for me both look great. The interior goes to the G but the F10 still has an excellent interior. Overall both look great. I would like to see chrome blade replaced with a body paint match.

Much better in the videos. I still would have made a smoother front bumper design. Some m sport bumpers lately are just a little odd. Especially the fog lights.

I'm sure the M5 will look perfect. Can't wait for that.

F10 535i: 1685 kg or 3715 lbs. G30 540i: 1595 kg or 3516 lbs
Difference: 90 kg or 198 lbs.

F10 520d: 1620 kg or 3571lbs. G30 520d: 1540 kg or 3395 lbs
Difference: 80 kg or 176 lbs.

VS Mercedes Latest E Class:
Mercedes E 200D: (Unladen DIN with 90% full tank and 75 kg driver) 1680 kg or 3704 lbs. Heavier by a whopping 140 kg or 309 lbs!! And we're talking about cars that are released within months of each other!

Another weight comparo of the 5er and E class (equivalent models)

530i: 1540 kg or 3395 lbs. E300: 1655 kg or 3649 lbs. Difference: 115 kg or 254 lbs.

540i X Drive (Mercedes only has 4matic for this category): 1660 kg or 3660 lbs. E 400 4Matic: 1820 kg or 4012 lbs. Difference: 160 kg or 353 lbs!!!

I can say just based on weight difference that the G30 will be a much better driving car than the E class!

VS Jaguar XF (made of Aluminium!!)
520d: 1540 kg or 3395 lbs. XF 2.0d: 1585 kg or 3494 lbs. Difference: 45 kg or 99 lbs.

540i: 1595 kg or 3516 lbs. XF 35t: 1710 kg or 3770 lbs. Difference: 115 kg or 254 lbs.

540i X Drive: 1660 kg or 3660 lbs. XF 35t AWD: 1760 kg or 3880 lbs. Difference 100 kg or 220 lbs.

The G30 is the leader in its class in low weight, at least until the new Audi A6 arrives...
Isn't DIN without the 75 kg driver, cause the F10 520d is 1620 kg without driver.

For real! Am I solo on thinking that everything getting bigger is just unnecessary? My folks just got a new civic and it is now frickin enormous. I couldn't stand driving it. I know it's a civic but every single car from every manufacturer is just bigger and fatter by the year....end rant...

In BMW's defense, that weight loss is coming after a "big increase in size".

Amazing how positioning the panels in the interior can make such a difference. The 5er interior looks a lot better than the 7er - everything looks tight and more cohesive vs. the 7er which looks like the HVAC control panel was just slapped on there. I'll have to see the rear in person but so far, the G30 5er is a excellent evolution from the F10.
