G31 Panoramic sunroof rattle
I've had my G31 LCI for a few months (from new) now and it's been great... apart from a very annoying rattle in the sunroof, which sounds like a tapping sound, exactly as if it's raining. It goes away when the sunroof is open, and also if you press very hard at the rear of the opening glass panel. It's been into the dealership a few times, and they've tried re-seating it, cleaning the seals, applying "anti rattle tape" along the front and rear of the opening panel, and they're at a loss what to do next. It frustratingly hasn't happened when I've taken them on a test drive.
It happens about 50-75% of the time I'm driving it. It's not massively loud, but it's present enough to be very annoying when it's there. Note, this is specifically the G31 panoramic roof, not the sunroof on the G30. I've seen other posts on X3's and older 5 series models, but looking at the photos, those have a different roof to the one on the G31, so the advice and suggestions aren't particularly relevant. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue on this specific model, that I might be able to point my dealer in the right direction? |

I had the same coming from the unit under the shark fin that houses the SOS battery.
Sounded like a microswitch clicking sis you check that area to be sure it's not from there. Had the garage sort out out when they were changing the battery. |

Just thought I'd give an update in case it helps anyone else in the future.
Between the front sliding and rear fixed panes, there is a spring loaded bar that rests against the front pane. Along the top of this bar, where it meets the glass is a rubber seal. It's quite hard to get to, but using my finger to "flick" the rubber, I could make exactly the same popping noise that I was hearing while driving. I couldn't get the bottle along, but squeezing some GummiPflege onto my finger, then wiping along the rubber seems to have completely removed the problem. I'm not sure why the dealer didn't do this when I was told they cleaned and softened all of the seals, or why a brand new car needs it, but hey, I'm a happy bunny again |
