End of lease return tires
I have 2 tires that will probably need to be replaced by lease end. Does anyone know if they need to be the same brand or just the size is fine?

I have never leased. But I expect BMW will want the same tires on all 4 wheels and only BMW OEM approved tires. Otherwise they will ding you as they’ll need to replace them before they can CPO the car.
At least that is logical to me. Only way out is if you purchased the lease protection plan that allows you to essentially prepay for stuff like bald tires at turn in. Check the classified section and buy a gently used pair for turn in. |

I would ask the turn in dealer. Better to be armed ahead than buy the wrong thing or get forced into buying the tires from them at full retail. Also depends on if you are leasing again from BMW - tends to be more forgiving.

Rather than trying to guess what is an acceptable tire, can the car just be turned in and then let BMW charge you for a couple of tires if they must? Is there really that much cost savings to go thru the trouble of doing it ahead?

I've never leased but I'll say this much, we were shopping CPO / off lease 540s at BMW dealers from March to June and we saw some cars that had 3 different brands of tires on them. Granted, this may have been before the cars has gone through the CPO process, I'm just saying what I saw.

Tires must have at least 4/32" of tread left.

And I'll add that replacement tires must be of same load class and speed rating as the oem tires. There's no need to use the same brand on all 4 corners nor is there a requirement to use BMW OE marked tires. This all assumes your lease is with BMWFS. Some third party leasing companies have different requirements.

https://www.bmwusa.com/return-vehicle.html I still wouldn't buy a car with mismatched tread, but it won't get you dinged so that's good for lease turn-in! |

This is the best advice here. Just turn it in and keep your fingers crossed. You can go out and spend money now and still get dinged. Let them do the work. Contrary to some other comments, the standard is not returning it in CPO quality. Most of the time they will replace all the tires for CPO even if they are passable for lease return and OEM.

In my years selling BMWs and taking in lease return cars, I saw a number of lessees dinged for tires that were to worn, tires that were mis-matched and tires that were not runflats. The very best thing to do, as one poster suggested earlier, is to go to the turn-in dealer and ask them to evaluate your car for any items that might cost you at turn in. They will usually be glad to help you with this. Especially in this market, they probably really want your car. I also learned over the years that in most cases it is cheaper for the lessee to let BMW charge you for whatever needs to be fixed rather than the lessee paying for a fix; also more convenient.--Bob

Take the hit for the tires on lease turn in. I thought they were $300 a piece. Either try to negotiate with your dealer to write them off upon turn in, or call BMW later and tell them you're leasing another one. At the very least they'll split the charge with you, so you only owe for 1 tire.
I got dinged for 2 a few months ago. Negotiated with dealer and got 1. Then called BMW Financial and they wrote off the other. It's usually a lot cheaper than replacing by yourself and I don't have to do anything. |
