Front License plate tow hook mount 2020 M550

Just got my 2020 M550 registered and realized it does not have a front License plate mount. Here in NH, its mandatory to have this. My service Tech at Tulley BMW told me to get a tow hook mount, but reading reviews on Amazon people say this type of mount screws with the parking sensors. My car definitely has them.

Is there a tow hook mount for the M550 that doesnt mess with the sensors ?

Thanks Mark

I am in MA, so similar issues. I did not want holes drilled into my bumper and I personally hate the tow hook look. I wanted something easy on and off. I actually only put it on annually for MA inspection sticker. I did get pulled over in my own town once, but he let me go. Just told me they issues two plates for a reason. I told him it was in the trunk and I just took it off for the car wash. White lie. I actually think he pulled me over because my music was too loud and I did not lower it when I went by him. Any how, I spent a lot of time on this subject when I got the car and looked into just about every solution. This is what I went with. I was stubborn and just double side taped the mount. It has been fine. I have driven to UNH and back with it on. You could drill one hole and screw it in for peace of mind (I might someday now that the novelty has worn off). It's underneath. No issues with the ACC sensor which is the reason I did the UNH trip with it on.

I use the US Millworks lightened with quick disconnect on my 2021 and have no parking sensor issues. You just need to angle it and position it correctly (US MillWorks one has a bunch of screw holes to adjust perfectly)

Have heard good things about the cravenspeen as well, but I like the cotter pin quick disconnect on the USMW one better personally

Thanks NVRfollo,

I ended up going with a STO N SHO plate bracket. It mounts to the under lip spoiler and has a quick release pull pin bracket. Very clean setup. No holes. Sturdy. Just ordered it yesterday and will post pics once i get it on.

I got the same one the day they released it! Easy install and looks great. For the most part I leave it off, but it’s so easy to take on and off. Love the no drill and no holes etc.

The CravenSpeed is the one, love how it’s close but not on the bumper. A little more expensive vs the Amazon ones but with it, no parking sensors issues.

doesn't the asymmetry of the license plate bother you guys or you drive without it to wait for a ticket? (This isn't new concept with the tow hook mount but I always found it to be too tacky than placing in the center with under bumper holes).

I drive without a plate and I've been waiting for a ticket for two years. I did get pulled over very close to my house, but that was more about having my B&W system with windows down at ear bleed levels and the cop monitoring traffic on the side of the road probably didn't like that I did not turn it down when I went by him. Pulled me over in front of my house. My go to story is I just went through the carwash and forgot to put it back on. Pulled it out of the trunk and put it on in front of him. After a parent to child like remark of "they give you two plates for a reason" he said have a nice day.

I use the Sto and Sho as well. For me, I absolutely hate the look and functionality of tow hook solutions. They are ugly, need to be screwed on and off and then you have the tow hook cover to always deal with which will wear out and break over time.

Now, the Sto and Sho receiver attaches under the front lip using existing screws and the plate bracket plugs in and out with a pull pin and spring clamp. Does it look OEM? No, but it looks a hell of a lot better than having your plate all the way to the right and cock-eyed.

I'm biased, but there is no better solution from the standpoints I mentioned. The plate is on my car for 15 minutes a year when I get an inspection sticker. The company is a pleasure to deal with as well. Husband and Wife operation.

Hmm, I like the look of the offset so I keep it on the tow hook and in MD front plates are required, so this works for me. Just an opinion.

They are required here in MA as well, I choose to be a rebel and have a clean look. To me, it's debatable on which is worse, holes in the bumper from the proper mount or the side kick tow hook thing.

True. I bought bumper plugs and they color match pretty well and almost looks like distance sensors.

I was fortunate to have a great salesman who could profile me pretty well and stopped the pit crew from drilling before he asked me, which was hell no. This was the same salesman who gave me the choice of a full tank of regular gas at the dealer on delivery or me putting in the high octane stuff myself. Again, another pass on the cheap gas. Crazy how a dealer can only have regular 87 octane when just about every model requires 91+.

Haven't run a front plate here in Kommiefornyastan for over 20 years. The only no-front-plate ticket I've received was travelling through Nebraska!

My car came with a front plate mount already on. Was a NJ car. I’m in TN and we don’t have them. For now I just put a decorative plate up there that goes with the cerium and looks okay, in my opinion (see picture below). But I’d rather not have it. Haven’t looked into bumper plugs. Are there vendors that are better than others? I’m wary of it matching well with the Champagne Quartz Metallic. If they matched, I do think they’d probably blend in with my parking sensors.

As far as I know and have seen, there’s only one company and they paint them with your paint code.

http://bumperplugs.com/bumperplugs-for-bmw

They will blend in just fine but they are raised so it’s not like they are going away. You will have to take your drill out and make the holes bigger to use them.

Plenty of videos out there on them. I’ve never used them but I would certainly give them a shot.

Welp, not sure how the platypus license plate doesn't trip the parking camera and sensors, but I can confirm it is good to go. I had a different tow hook plate mount and no matter what I did, it would always trip the sensor. Can't remember who posted the link to cravenspeed, but glad I found it.
