2018 M550 front end noise

Hello all...

New to the forum and new to BMW ownership.

Have a 2018 M550 with just over 20K miles.

Drives great and I am very happy with the car overall except for a highly annoying noise that is coming from the front of the vehicle during idle and low RPM. The noise is intermittent and seems to go away as you accelerate.

I would describe the noise as a blend between some sort of rattle and gurgle. It is not associated with AC/heat as it still makes the same noise with system turned off. i can attach a snort video to help if someone can direct me as to how to do so...

Hoping someone can help me identify and maybe remedy.

Thanks all.

Steve from Boston

Is it like metal chains on aluminum at low Rpms when idling to a stop? If so I asked the same thing when I got my 2019 m550 the week I got it.

Steve,
Is the noise from the engine or vents? I heard a 'chirping' noise from my engine that happens on starts, but goes away once warm. Its the turbos. Its normal. I did not hear anything in your videos.

I haven't been able to hear it when the hood is open… can hear it thru the vents - and if the car is in park it will not make the noise - it only happens when it is in drive but does happen when it is in drive and not moving…

Sounds like you can easily duplicate it for service. Take it in. Might be a blower motor.

Sounds like something in blower motor even though ac is off. I can hear it clear as day. It could also be ASD not operating right at low rpms and sending wrong sound to speakers? Try coding ASD off and see if it's gone

YES!! I have this, my scheduled maintenance is Oct 13th and I can't wait for it to be fixed. Accelerating/Decelerating, as soon as I get to about 10mph it sounds like the drivers side rear tire well has metal clanging together or something.

Have you had yours looked at yet?

Yes had manager ride with me, said it's within spec and nothing to worry about. ….

Yeah been there since day one, to me it sounds like a Ford with that noise.

Ask him to show you the “spec” in an official BMW document.

Follow up and update - BMW has had the car now for six days and still has no idea what the issue is. They have reached out to "big BMW" for help. More to come as I am hoping I have an answer so the next person doesn't have to deal with this

I think BMW trains its techs to say "within spec" as a first response to every thing.

I have mine in for this right now. They said "something is rattling around in the driver side rear wheel" and they are replacing it. Definitely doesn't sound like that to me since it only happens at 5-10mph then no noise above or below that. I'll believe it when I DONT hear it haha.

Solved

See attached picture for what was found and how they fixed it. Problem was so rare they reported it to BMW corporate.
