questions on tunes and piggy backs and warranty

I purchased a CPO 540i recently and am now getting the itch to modify. I am wondering if something happened to engine would it void warranty if they see a tune. I know you can remove some before service, but am wondering if they can detect anything in computer. I am guessing most are safe tunes that wont harm motor, but just want to make sure I didnt spend money on a CPO that will just be void due to a tune. Does anyone have feedback on this or know which systems would go undetected if removed?

Yes, they will void your warranty. Technically, they cannot void your warranty unless the "mod" (in this case a tune) is determined to be the cause of the issue. But, they know most people are not going to get a lawyer and fight with them. Engine failure is easy to point to the tune as the cause; so, if something goes wrong, you are SOL. But, let's say you have a defective headlight or something to that effect, they cannot point to the tune and say you voided your warranty and, therefore, they will not replace the headlight. Look up the magnuson law.

The dealership is not allowed to deny warranty work unless they can prove its related to your mods and even then there is a high possibility they won't deny it as they are getting paid by BMW for the work

If this was a common thing, it would be all over the forums with hundreds of thousands of modified BMWs on the streets.

This is true; but, if it's a serious engine failure, and the car has a tune, I think it's pretty safe to say BMW will void warranty and not cover the repairs.

Correct but the odds of this happening is almost zero

I am tempted to tune my 540i, but it's not just the warranty that is a worry.

There was a case last year where BMW revoked finance on a (heavily) modified M5.

The likelihood of that happening to you is very slim. Unless you're a pro YouTuber like this guy. I was FBO on my e90 335i while with BMW Financial. Nothing happened. It's also in the dealership's service department best interest to keep you as a customer as they can bill BMW for the work. However, to each their own.

This car was running circa 1000bhp, there is a big difference between meth and a remap.

I agree, it seems BMW turn a blind eye whereas VAG were very militant with TD1 flags.
