It should be automatic.
Closed when park ed (if not hot from a drive)
And will remain closed to warm up the car from cold and then open up if required to cool the car.

Not sure why you would want to do this even if it were possible?

If faulty the dealer will sort out under warranty

This sounds like a recipe for disaster, unless it ALWAYS is closed

There are two active flaps, above and below the bumper. Top always closed until temp triggers opening. Bottom open when parked, closed when cold and ignition on, opening as temp rises.

Not sure if the two sets are on different thermostat settings to arrive at progressive opening.

It's the one thing I would not mess with on the car.

90% of wear and tear occurs in the first few minutes of driving, when the car is cold. This feature reduces that by closing air flow, thereby allowing the engine to reach operating temperature much quicker.

Huh I was wondering why the temp rises so quickly on the temp gauge.

Somewhat agree to that.

But, leaving in So-Cal where it is hot 10 months out of the year, it doesn't affect it
Car still warms up in minutes.

Besides, this is BMW statement.

"The all new Air Breather and Active Kidney Grille

The new Active Kidney Grille optimizes engine cooling and aerodynamics. Whenever additional cooling air is required, the Active Kidney Grille bars and flaps in the lower air intake automatically swing open. This feature tailors the amount of air for cooling the engine and brakes in a total of five stages as demands dictate. This system activates depending on several temperature thresholds as well as the speed of the vehicle. For instance during the warming-up phase and when operating at low loads, the BMW Active Kidney Grille is closed completely to maximize the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicle."

Have your car looked at. I had both flaps replaced on mine because of the opening mechanism being faulty.

I just wonder if BMW is making its vehicles overly technically complicated. Like every other car it would work fine without active flaps and there will be less to go wrong and maintain. BMW should concentrate on making its cars safer with automatic braking and audible safety warnings of lane changes etc. These safety features are standard now on Toyota, Honda, Subaru and other luxury cars. All the sensors are already on the car, it just requires a software change to make them work. If you don't believe in these safety features you can disable them.

I could not find the safety features that I wanted on dealer lots so I had to factory order these at extra cost.

I think you contradict yourself by saying BMW should focus on safety features and then saying you have to factory order them if you need them. All the features you mentioned are available on BMW and many of them are standard in G30.

As for active shutters, they have a specific purpose. It's not there for cosmetic reasons.

Fun fact : The F10 had a similar system behind the grill, also for 2019 the Driver Assistance package is standard.

It sounds to me as if the car would be fine without them or if they were somehow left, or coded, open.

Since the grille "optimizes engine cooling and aerodynamics," the mere point of them being removed, or open full time, would just add additional cooling, and reduce the aerodynamics.

The BMW statement refers to adding aerodynamics during "the warming-up phase," but apparently they are not required to be closed, as it makes no mention of being necessary to bring the car up to temperature.

Seemingly, the active kidney grilles exist more for aerodynamics than for any other reason.

Did you get any codes or lights as a result of removing? I hear it triggers a CEL.

is the faulty reflected in the idrive system? or show any indicator light? Mine active grille was normal for a year, and now it stayed open and the engine check indicator light on and show no error message in the idrive

Can't recall exactly, but there was no idrive notification (specifically)for sure. Just a service notification I think.

They are covered under warranty if stuck open for 10Y by an extended warranty from BMW for this issue.
