HARMAN will be the first company to offer a system utilizing CarPlay's wireless implementation with the iPhone by connecting through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Operation will be just like connecting via physical wire -- allowing for simultaneous operation of a vehicle's in-car entertainment and CarPlay navigation while providing calls, music playback, and other features to be controlled through the car's display.

Even better news is that this new technology will first be available in the new BMW 5 Series!

Wireless CarPlay is an official feature in iOS 9 and will also be available in after-market solutions.

Press release

February 23, 2017

STAMFORD, CT – HARMAN International Industries, Incorporated (NYSE: HAR), the premier connected technologies company for automotive, consumer and enterprise markets, today announced the successful commercial implementation of Apple CarPlay integration through a wireless connection, a first for the connected car industry. Through HARMAN’s end-to-end infotainment system, a vehicle’s Bluetooth and WiFi will enable the connectivity required to support CarPlay, creating a greatly enhanced wireless experience for the user. The solution is currently being deployed in the market on HARMAN infotainment systems for a luxury German automaker.

While other implementations of Apple CarPlay have been supported through a USB connection to-date, HARMAN is the first to enable wireless implementation with the iPhone connecting via Bluetooth and data transferring via WiFi. The HARMAN infotainment system provides flexibility between native and CarPlay Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and allows for simultaneous operation of head unit functionality and CarPlay navigation. The integration of Apple CarPlay provides users the various functions of their iPhone, including calls, music playback, mobile office, and navigation to be controlled through the car’s display. Additionally, the system also allows the use of voice-recognition for a safer, hands-free experience.

“HARMAN continues to deliver options to consumers for seamless integration of multiple mobile ecosystems into our integrated automotive platform,” said Phil Eyler, executive vice president and president, Connected Car, HARMAN. “Whether CarPlay, Android Auto, or any other projection mode solution, HARMAN is the industry leader with pioneering support for these accessory apps. We look forward to working with automakers to roll out this technology and together with many HARMAN solutions to offer consumers safe, secure, and harmonious driving experiences.”

How is this different than what is available on the MY17 f80? I can connect to use CarPlay without the need for a wired connection. I do it every day.

Isn't this already possible? I had a X3 loaner last week and was able to use apple CarPlay wirelessly (at least i believe i was able to). No wire lightning cable required and I was able to do email, text, maps/navigation, etc. all through my phone. Maybe i was only using the a basic portion as i didn't try podcasts, other apps, etc, but what exactly is the difference?

Because Harman is the OEM that builds the head units for BMW

Its the same system
The system was first produced for teh G30 5 Series in 2016 when its production started.
The F80 got it afterwards.

Dont know why Harman is only now stating it, since BMW made a media release about it long long ago.

As mentioned above, it came out in 2016.
Dont know why Harman is now only giving a press release.

All that is marketing BS.

It just sounds like when you wirelessly transmit music, it'll use "Harmon kardon approved" codecs. Its same shit they pulled with cellphones that have Beats audio (tweaked EQ to give more bass and that's it).

Not BS
It was the first system to allow wireless carplay
Up till then all other motor manufacturers with carplay made you use the USB cord

Serious question here. Why is the Apple CarPlay so great? I don't even know what it is (I am not an avid iPhone user, go android). Is it really that great that it is a must in vehicles now-a-days?

Again, not hating or anything, I just want to see what is the Apple CarPlay all the rave about. If that is also the case, I'm pretty sure Android users should have a Android CarPlay in BMWs?

Carplay just lest you use your Apple phone from the Idrive screen.
Same icons, direct access to messages, music, apps ect ect

Many are actually saying Idrive is superior and many on the forums here have actually deactivated carplay after getting it because they dont like it, especially its maps

Ummm Wireless Apple CarPlay has been available on nearly every BMW (built post August 2016) as an optional upgrade. The G30 was not the first car for sale that this was available for....

And Apple Car Play stinks anyway. BMW's connectivity is WAY better and easier.

I saw it first on the G12, when it came out last year. I don't know why they are saying that the G30 is the first car to have wireless Carplay. I have yet to see a BMW that support Carplay that is not "wireless."

Completely agree with you on this. The car already can do 99% of the things Carplay does, other then showing you the Apple/Google Maps on the screen, but for example like the 2, 3, 4 series where NAV is not standard, to get Carplay NAV is required. I don't see the point...

The first car to have wireless carplay installed during production was the G30, though these were not regular customer cars but press and show cars.
The G11/G12 got it later.

I agree with this as Apple Maps suck and with iDrive 5.0 and 6.0 the map and traffic data is received in realtime via the 4G connection so you can trust its accuracy. Plus the whole iDrive GUI looks better than CarPlay anyways.

And yes, I have wireless CarPlay on my 2017 F80. Not sure how this press release is accurate. They're definitely using it to promote the new 5 hahaha
