Completely agree with you on this. The car already can do 99% of the things Carplay does, other then showing you the Apple/Google Maps on the screen, but for example like the 2, 3, 4 series where NAV is not standard, to get Carplay NAV is required. I don't see the point...
I completely also agree with you on this. CarPlay isn't all the hype that it has been receiving.

Had Iphone 6s plus. Car play worked like a dream.
Switched to HUAWEI mate 9 pro now which uses android system. No more car play.

I'm in a loaner right now (woot BMW) and it has apple car play on wireless Bluetooth.

I'm def not smoking anything, so Harman better correct it's press release...

Btw, the Integration is so good I'd trade my car in, literally changes how you use your iPhone in the car.

Some things in CarPlay are nice to have but lots of issues in my 2017 F80. Maps always start at the entire US level ( like WTF?) and when a message comes in forget about your music or whatever else you were doing, it's gone until you deal with the message. Half the time the damn thing doesn't connect and start working but it looks like it has. But no sound comes out! Yesterday I could answer calls but not hear anything. Got out of car and phone worked fine. Rarely have issues just using iDrive. I'm using an iPhone 6s on latest iOS.

Not interested in Apple. Both Audi and MB offer Android auto as an option. Its about time BMW wakes up and caters to the majority of cellphone users out there.

Again, not hating or anything, I just want to see what is the Apple CarPlay all the rave about. If that is also the case, I'm pretty sure Android users should have a Android CarPlay in BMWs?
It's terrible. I deactivated mine within 2 days of pickup. Save the cash

Ps it uses the car's wifi (no hotspot needed). That part was freaky ( I shut off Bluetooth AND disconnected my phone and it kept going! )

Exactly! I was responding to a message when a call came in and that was it for anyone being able to hear me on the phone! That was the last straw (especially since I was on the highway and the only fix ended up being to get off the highway and shut the car down).

Agreed but if you're in a rental car (Think Ford Sync) and you'll wish you had CarPlay. In the BMW, iDrive is significantly better.

Wireless CarPlay is available in the 2017 X5 which started production last summer with the introduction of iDrive 5.0.

Wireless Carplay is available in almost every BMW model Range. The few that dont yet have it, like the X1, are supposed to get it later this year.

All got it after it started life in the G30.

No it did not. At least not if you are implying the G30 started production before it was rolled out to other models. The G30 started production in November. Guess when the F15 started production? Need a hint? It was three months before G30 production.

Read teh BMW press release from months ago.
First car ever fitted with the system was a G30.
Remember G30 production started long before customer G30 production back in 2016

Yep we have it in our 2017 x5. Big waste of $300.

I would agree that on any other vehicle media interface the apple CarPlay would be superior but BMW just gets it so right with Idrive.

I remember when iDrive first debuted on the E65, it was hated by almost all but 15 years later it really has come a long way that today we are saying its implementation of the navigation and in car entertainment is superior to Apple. Kudos to BMW!

I guess I'm the only one that isn't an iDrive fanboy. It's alright but has lots of issues managing contacts and music. I prefer Apple CarPlay.

The first car to have wireless carplay installed during production was the G30, though these were not regular customer cars but press and show cars.
The G11/G12 got it later.
Try again. The G12 had it last year

Press release

February 23, 2017

STAMFORD, CT – HARMAN International Industries, Incorporated (NYSE: HAR), the premier connected technologies company for automotive, consumer and enterprise markets, today announced the successful commercial implementation of Apple CarPlay integration through a wireless connection, a first for the connected car industry. Through HARMAN’s end-to-end infotainment system, a vehicle’s Bluetooth and WiFi will enable the connectivity required to support CarPlay, creating a greatly enhanced wireless experience for the user. The solution is currently being deployed in the market on HARMAN infotainment systems for a luxury German automaker.

While other implementations of Apple CarPlay have been supported through a USB connection to-date, HARMAN is the first to enable wireless implementation with the iPhone connecting via Bluetooth and data transferring via WiFi. The HARMAN infotainment system provides flexibility between native and CarPlay Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and allows for simultaneous operation of head unit functionality and CarPlay navigation. The integration of Apple CarPlay provides users the various functions of their iPhone, including calls, music playback, mobile office, and navigation to be controlled through the car’s display. Additionally, the system also allows the use of voice-recognition for a safer, hands-free experience.

“HARMAN continues to deliver options to consumers for seamless integration of multiple mobile ecosystems into our integrated automotive platform,” said Phil Eyler, executive vice president and president, Connected Car, HARMAN. “Whether CarPlay, Android Auto, or any other projection mode solution, HARMAN is the industry leader with pioneering support for these accessory apps. We look forward to working with automakers to roll out this technology and together with many HARMAN solutions to offer consumers safe, secure, and harmonious driving experiences.”
