I use the OBDLink for Bluetooth, but I generally prefer an ENET cable because it is so much faster.

I used BMDiag wifi enet high speed BMW coding adapter as recommended by bimmercode.

Don't like Bluetooth and enet is faster.

Used several times, no issues

You can use an ENET cable with an Android phone. Just get a USB-Ethernet adapter and enable ethernet tethering in Settings (assuming you have at least Android 11.)

It's better if you don't have wifi at home! Your android phone forms a wifi link to the adapter and works with that alone.

I have wifi at home but I am living in a condo apartment
And my car is park in the parking under my apartment
I got only bluetooth connection.
If I park the car in the street not sure I would have wifi connection with my android phone and it's android 8.0(Sony xperia xz from 2017)
I really want to go with iPhone 13 mini to get Carplay on my g30.
There are people here with Carplay, want to know if it's very nice or just OK it's Carplay but not a revolution.

I don't see how you having wifi at home(or condo??) has anything to do with anything??

With that being said, I use OBDLink CX bluetooth which is recommended and all functions work without issues. I've tried previously using some older/chinese bluetooth adapters and wasn't able to load all modules.

It's not officially supported and will not show all modules in the app

Don't worry about home wifi. The wifi OBD adapter creates a wifi network for you to connect to on the phone. Your phone and the adapter will not be using the home wifi

Also i would suggest to upgrade your phone first. Android 8 is too old to do critical work like this

The wifi adapters such as the MHD black doesn't need home wifi, it broadcasts a wifi network you connect to. It is a super fast adapter.

I can't speak for the Wifi adapters, but ENET is way faster than Bluetooth. Has anybody compared Wifi speed to ENET?

Even in diagnostic mode with my seatbelt fastened, I'm always scared to death that power will be cut just while I'm coding. There is no such thing as "fast enough" in my book.

What power cut are you worried about? The car cutting out or power to your home assuming you are coding at home?

I'm struggling to see how a power cut to your home affects a wifi dongle powered by your car and a cell phone powered by battery. If your car loses power, you're screwed with any connection, wired or wireless. This is why you put a tender on the car.

Now, the risk of using a any wireless connection to code is losing that connection in the middle of a flash. Wireless connections whether BT or wifi can definitely be lost or interrupted for a variety of reasons. Your phone could kick you off randomly at the wrong time or the adapter can hit a glitch. A wired connection is always the most foolproof.

Admittedly, I use the MHD black and wifi almost always. I've been known to do some coding at lunch time at work. The faster you can code and get in and out the better. WiFi and Ethernet are similar speeds for the purposes of coding. You really are waiting on the software on the phone to do it's thing more than sending the file and bits and bites to the car. Bluetooth is significantly slower than wifi and less stable. The MHD black also has an Ethernet port if you choose to plug in.

I'm referring to the fact that if you get into the car and don't start the engine for some time, maybe about 20 minutes, it will cut power to the ECUs without warning. You can in theory avoid this by entering diagnostic mode and fastening the driver's seat belt, but it will still cut power if the battery drains below a safe voltage. Coding with the engine running will alleviate the power risk, but then you can't access all of the modules. I believe that the only safe and fully functional way to code is to activate diagnostic mode, fasten the driver seat belt, and connect the battery to a trickle charger to ensure a safe voltage.

If I'm mistaken, somebody please correct me because I'd love to find a better way.

Correct, connect battery tender, enter Diagnostic Mode, buckle up. It will not shut down or kick you out of diagnostic mode.

The battery tender may be a little overkill for a quick in and out code. I've been know to code at lunchtime at work in the parking lot. But yeah, to be bulletproof always hook it up before coding.
