Need your opinions on which BMW to get

Since this is a BMW forum I thought you guys would help me out.

Cars I am looking at...

2001 E38 740i or 740iL (With Sport Pkg)

2002-03 E39 540i

1996-99 E36 M3

Tell me what you would choose and for what reason, also if you have any suggestions I am more than willing to look into them. My max budget is about 12K. Thanks for your help.

You have a luxury vehicle, a sport/luxury hybrid, and a road machine all laid out.

It all comes down to what you're feeling.

If you want a raw driving machine close to the roots of the e30, the e36 m3 is damn good.

None of the above. I'm not sure you're going to get much value for a $12,000 used BMW.

Dude just look around, this is very doable. And to all the others thanks for your opinions, I just wish I had more money then I would have all three. M3 for weekends, 540i for weekdays and 740li for trips

540, unless you can get a nice, not ragged-out, E36 M3.

On one end of the spectrum you have a 7 series (luxury) while on the other you have an M3 (sport). Therefore the only logical choice is the middle ground 540i as it blends them both together.

540 for a daily drive or the M3 for the weekends...depends on your plans.

I would go for the 540. Though I love all 3 of them. Had an old E38 love them honestly even still they have so much presence on the road.
