Foam It Up!

I made a purchase recently that my paint and lower back thanked me for today. Any guesses?

I've contemplated a foam gun before but never bothered. Always figured I'd use it a few times then be annoyed with the extra setup and tear down. Why is it so much better than a good rinsing and soapy mitt? Yes, it looks great all foamed up, but I'm wondering what's the real world benefit? And I have watched YouTube videos. The ones that really look good require a pressure washer. If I've got to add a pressure washer to the mix, I've just ratcheted up the annoyance factor 10x.

I used to be like you too, I hated to wash the car and just took everything we had to the local gas station self drive car wash. I started watching some YouTube stuff and am now deeply into it. I love and look forward to the weekends of detailing our three vehicles. I would say that if you followed (and had the money) to purchase the full ObsessedGarage spec pressure washer, wands, guns, cannon and liquids, it would reduce the frustration and make the experience pretty fun...just my .02$

Which one are you using? Pressure washer or household water pressure?

To use a foam gun and get that type of foaming, you will need a pressure washer. Also some shampoos are better at foaming and recommended if foaming prior to a wash.

Yes.....yes it is....but it is amazing how nice and easy it is to maintain a properly cared for BMW by following the OG methods and using the equipment he sells.

Hah - YouTube vids are what got me into detailing too. Way too many hours of Pan & Larry.

Have been thinking about a true foam cannon for a while. For now I got some cheapo $20 thing that hooks up to a regular garden hose; but actually does a decent job of setting a layer of soapy film on the paint and getting most of the major gunk off.

I still go over everything with a mitt but dirt and crap just kind of sweeps away at that point.

Those of you with true foam cannons - are you actually able to just foam up the car, rinse, and be done for maintenance washes? The most back-breaking part for me is cleaning the wheels and drying. And then every 2nd/3rd wash I usually want to hit it with a quick wax or something to re-up the protection (I don't have any wrap or ceramic on mine).

For the final result I am trying to achieve, drying is still necessary. If you maintain a good level of wax/coating and have a good large drying towel it's quick and easy. Plus the foam cannon is so much better for your paint than a wash mitt.

I might have to borrow one from a friend and try it out.

For drying I actually have started using a leafblower! After rinse I just go around with thah and it blasts off most of the water. Then toweling is just a matter of getting any remaining drops and drips from the hard to reach spots.

For zero drying with no water spots use a de-ionized water solution. Allows you to simply do a final rinse and walk away with no drying towels, etc,. to drag across the newly cleaned surface. Expensive - sure, but makes the car wash process even less painful.
