So given the long list of Benz's in your path, how would you compare the driving experience between MB and BMW?

(I know what I think)
MB definitely started changing the way they made their cars once the 4cyl turbos were introduced, from there on they started feeling like Japanese cars and not German cars. Right around like 5 - 7 years ago. They just felt light and the suspension was off. It seemed like they were more focused on the design now, especially the interior. I think they knew not everyone in the luxury market really cared about how a car drives - hence, the roads are filled with SUVs.

I can't judge the whole MB brand vs BMWs as we all know not everyone BMW drives like a M550i. But I can say the M550i is a phenomenal all around sports sedan. Also in a MB the C class to E class quality is quite similar, but I really don't think I can do a base 330i. Seems to be a noticeable difference going from a 3 to a 5.

From what I have experienced so far - BMW is definitely more driver focused/oriented, but lacks in the interior and exterior department. i.e. the interior is a step behind and some of the most abnormal exterior designs are being released these days lol.

MB is definitely more focused on interior design and options etc. And if you want something more driver focused you can step up the game by going into the AMG territory.

AMG vs M, AMG is more raw power while M is more track focused.

Really comes down to what someone's preference is. But yea, both make great cars and pretty sure one or the other brand wouldn't be where they are today without the competition. I think its good that they both found their niche. I jumped over to BMW because I ran out of the next car to drive for MB. Really hoping the next 5 series is awesome as well, because if not I am not sure which BMW I would get next.

Thanks for this. My list of cars is in my signature. No MB's in my wake, although I have test drove them and many of my friends have the E-Class. I could not agree with you more on the Japanese feel of the newer generation cars. They are soft, like a Lexus and I agree, a lot of people like a floater. Feeling the road is German engineering, although it's not always the most quiet and comfortable. I do think the fit and finish of the MB is a little better than BMW, but at the same time, I just don't like the lack of aggressiveness of the interior. Again, the Lexus thing.

I am with you. I am hoping the G60 is irresistible. There really aren't any other models I would want for my fun car. I am probably going to pick up an X5 over the holidays, but that doesn't really get my juices flowing. More because I need an SUV and I am love BMW engineering.

I could be wrong about my MB models, but it looks like you’ve got 2 V6, a V8 in the middle, and then a run of 4-5 more V6 models. Any reason you stuck in the 300 level so long, given you went for the big dog at BMW?

I wanted to check out an E400 but never got time to get over to the dealer. And I was already biased to BMW anyway. Very happy with it.

Spot on. To add, i thought the AMG’s were miserable for daily drivers. To me, The transmissions were awful….banging gears while just cruising. I found the M550i’s to be the best of all worlds, especially for the money.

90% of the time I'm in some type of slow moving traffic whether local or highway. If I never got the chance to drive the M550i while waiting for a 540 M sport that I liked, I think there are high chances I would be in a 540 right now. The 4cyl 530 was a bit underwhelming for a big car like the 5 series so at a minimum it would have been the 540. Guess it was just fate that there was a 550 available but not a 540 M sport, considering the v8s will be discounted..

Just picked my 540 up from the detailer and left the X7 with him. Just a normal wash. He did a great job. That’s not the first time I’ve used him, but it is the first time he’s (or anyone besides me) has washed it since I got it.

He told me his friend just opened a shop in town selling detail products and carrying all the good stuff. CarPro, P&S, among other high end products. And some of Joe’s special Korean microfiber! Can’t wait to go kill some time in there.

He must be a great detailer if he carries genuine Korean MF😂. Sometimes I really have to laugh at myself out loud.

So what was his opinion of your ceramic? Wasn’t this the guy you were going to ask?

Yes, same guy. If anything, he had incentive to be negative because it was done by a competitor. But he said it looked like it’s in pretty good shape. That made me feel better. He said it probably had just gotten dirty and needed to be revived/washed. Then I asked him about the CarPro Descale, which he said he hasn’t used, and that took us into the conversation about his friend opening the new store.

As you’d expect, there are a couple places he maybe missed on his final wipe down that I wouldn’t have. BUT overall he got it shining better than it has in a while.

Okay, so I read an interesting comment on the X7 forum but the thread was locked so I thought I’d bring it here. I really would rather hear you guys’ opinion anyway.

The discussion was on the direction of BMW and M and he made the comment the 4 and 8 are both going away and being replaced by the return of the 6 series.

I don’t really mind the idea of the 6 coming back and replacing the 4 and the 8. It makes more sense. The 4 is a little too small for me and the interior elements aren’t impressive. The 8 is a beast and obviously the other end of the spectrum on interior luxury. But it’s quite expensive. I think a 6 that split the difference would be a very very marketable vehicle. If a new 6 series were to the 5 what the current 4 series is to the 3, I’d be very intrigued.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?
Yepp, so same thing over at MB. They got rid of the C coupe/cab and the E coupe/cab and combined it into the upcoming CLE. I am all for the new 6.

Sales percentage wise for any coupe/cab is quite low compared to SUVs and sedans, plus now they need to make tons of EVs lol.
Might as well make something that's worthwhile and fits the bill.

Was starting to look into the 8 coupe but found out there is no sunroof. haha I can't do a 6 figure car with no sunroof and tiny interior space. 8 gran coupe on the other hand is pretty darn long.. with low visibility.

BMW012 ahhh so that’s what the CLE is. I was so confused on their site. Makes total sense.

I love the 8. Don’t mind long. I love a big ass car with a big swinger taking up room on the road. But it’s too pricey to really be accessible. Which I realize is all relative, but I mean relative to even the average BMW consumer. I’m sure that’s all intentional and that’s cool. But I’m with you, all in on seeing what the 6 is about. I‘d probably have to be in the GC category with the kids. But maybe if the back of the 6 coupe was just big enough and I didn’t need the car seat in a few years…
