Weekend Car(s)
I'm curious to know how many of you guys have weekend cars, and what kind?
I've got a serious itch for a 6mt coupe. Something that won't destroy the bank and it doesn't need to be "fast". This M550i is dumb fast and fun and classy and bossy and just fantastic! Howeevveerrrr, it is an automatic computerized sedan. I'm just kind of looking for a raw manual "toy" car to cruise around in. It's been a while since I've had one but I sure do miss it (Infiniti G35 coupe...shouldn't have sold this one). Anyway, I was casually looking at some Miatas. Started looking at older M3s too but many of them have been tastelessly modified, if not just abused! Anything worth considering, sellers are asking about 1.5-2x what they should be going for. Now I've got an eye out for a nicely maintained 986 and 987 Porsche Boxster S. They're around 15-25k in good shape. Would love to grab one of those for some weekend fun! Ultimate goal is a Porsche 997 Turbo, but they want silly money for this cars right now. I'm sure some of you have some baller weekend cars. Would love to hear what you have...baller-mobile or just a project/toy car. |

Had a 2007 Porsche Boxster S back in 08 or 09? was definitely a fun car! Would be interesting if it will still deliver the same amount of enjoyment as it was quite awhile ago. Obviously, the tech will be old and might not have the same type of options that are modern now, but it should have the analog/naturally aspirated 6 spd fun.

I did like the Infiniti, but I felt that I outgrew it. Felt like a boy's car vs a man's car lol. I shouldn't have sold it because I could've gotten a few more yrs of analog fun out of it. I always felt like a 21 yr old driving around in that thing. Nevertheless, on to bigger and better things! The 440i is nice, but my 5er will outshine that thing imo and it's still going to be computer heavy as most newer bimmers are. I'd rather go a diff brand for a totally diff look/experience from my 5 and go somewhat older for that analog drive...no computers/cameras/screens...just a raw car. Would love a 996 Carrera 4S or Turbo to whip around. I love how different and hated they are in the Porsche community...might just try and find an inexpensive 986 Boxster S for a few to scratch this itch. Switch it up after a couple yrs. I'm afraid of older BMWs to be honest. Porsches I hear are not as frightening to own as they age. |

If you're wanting something with more power, I get it. But if you're looking at the Miata route but like bimmers, then I'd check out the old roadsters. You can find them without too many miles and not break the bank. Pretty low maintenance. There's not much on them to maintain!

No, I certainly don't own it. A friend owns part of a small charter fleet and I fly repositioning legs on weekend. Just to maintain.

Highly recommend a 987 for your weekend car. My 981 is a less "raw" version of the 987 and even then, it gives me a more connected drive than any bmw I've ever driven. There is basically no sound insulation, the car is naturally very low without suspension mods, and the engine has no power until the higher RPMs, which are all perfect characteristics for a fun car hahaha

My current alternative (to my '19 540xi) is a 2016 Corvette Z06. It an A8 automatic but with 650 HP who cares? Virtually all my toy cars over the years have been stick shifts, so when I bought the Z06 at almost 70, I figured I was entitled to an automatic and a warranty. Plus the A8 has very effective paddle shifters and allow me to mimic the sound of a stick shift pretty well. But some of my past cars over many years were great also. In no particular order of greatness or enjoyment: 1991 Miata SE (BRG/Tan), C4 Corvette ZR-1s, 1990 Porsche 911 C4, some XKEs, a '67 Austin Healey, '74 Pantera, '80 308. None were very expensive when I owned them. Pick one you like and go for it. Any good toy car is fun to have as an alternative to the regular sedan, no matter how nice the sedan is. But I have to admit the Z06 can be A LOT of fun, and they are available with a stick shift.... And I should point out that this is sufficiently fun that between April and November this is often more than a weekend car--it is my daily driver with the BMW up on my lift for extended periods. --Bob

This might be a dumb question but I've never had to think about this til recently. Those if you with a rag top, do you park your car outside during the winter/snowy months? I only have a 2-car garage and I'd like to keep those for my wife's and my main cars.
