Unhappy Sidewall Bulge on Goodyear Runflats

Just saw this yesterday and it feels like a kick in the gut.

Been thinking of going 19 inch rims with runflats.
Just wonder what are people's experiences like with 19 inch rims and runflats.
I live in LA and there are some decent size potholes on my commute, been trying to avoid them as best as I could, but this still happened.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you

I had exactly the same bubble on the Goodyear rft I had on my 530d and I think it was there for over six months!

Not the smartest thing but the PS4s were always on back order etc.

Finally got them on but the tyre fitter said it wasn't that bad.

Check out the other thread on space savers.

I'm on 759 20s with non RFt PS4s and they ride quality is so much better it's like a different car!

Not sure how much it'll help with pot holes but def worth considering if before you go to 19s

Thanks for the info man. So you had a bubble like this for 6 months? Did you do any highway driving during that period of time or mostly city driving?

Thanks

I am in the same boat, I had a bulge just like that on my M550i after hitting a pothole in Philly. I made it 2 weeks before I hit a small bump and it blew. So now I am trying to decide if I should go with 19s and run-flats, or keep my 20s and do non run-flats? I am interested in hearing what you end up choosing.

I feel your pain man. And the weird part is that I don't recall running over any super big potholes recently, maybe one from about a month ago on the freeway.

I will update on what my final decision is.

Several threads on this, it is a known problem for the Goodyear Asymmetric F1 tires, which are terrible, in my opinion. I replaced mine with Michelin PS3ZP runflats (I have 20 inch 668Ms) and have had no further problems. Good ride and performance, too. Love them.

Yep. I'd say I had it like that for six months. Highway and urban. Never lost any tyre pressure

I had decided to get rid of the run flats even before this and then when I saw the bubble I thought right I'll do it next week.

I was supposed to get the tyres via a friend and then it dragged on.

In the end I got four PS4s for €720 and it's like a different car!

I'm in Houston and got my car on Saturday. I have the 20 inch setup with cerium gray wheels. Although I've been careful, I've hit two potholes in the dark already. Now if BMW wants to sell more cars, I highly recommend they create pothole warning detection (PWD) and the ability to have the car drive over it rather than into it. I would buy it!

Did anyone opt to get wheel and tire coverage?

I couldn't imagine 20s in Philly. The roads here are unbearable.

...there are many many reasons why I am unable to make my vehicle a DD due to crater-size potholes, holes surround the drainage areas on side of roadways/highways, holes around the sunken manholes, widened expansion joints, etc....and so, my G30 to me is like riding the motorcycle, I never take it when I have to be somewhere.

How do you tell if you have the updated model? My '21 M550 came with 19" Goodyear Eagle F1's when I got it last September.

20s in Philly is definitely not pleasant! I have an older Tahoe that I have mainly been driving because the potholes are so big they can swallow a small car. What are you running for tires? Are you on run-flats?

Yeh it's the big potholes that are the issue. Had to have a 20 inch tyre replaced recently. Hit a badly maintained cover in the road which made an almighty thump through the car, knew it was not good news.

A small vibration could be detected at 50mph plus which confirmed matters, around town you wouldn't know
Tyre continue to work , no loss of pressure but obviously had to be changed.
I guess motto is examine tyres regularly to be sure they are ok.

For me my G30 is my DD and I live in S. Philly so you can imagine that I have to deal with...

I ordered by car with the base 18" wheels due to concerns about how well the tires would hold up to potholes if I went any larger. 19" and 20" wheels look fantastic and unlock the higher top speed, but I wasn't interested in buying new tires on a regular or dealing with bent wheels!

So far, tires and wheels have held up really well... I had a G30 loaner from the dealer with 19" wheels and it had a bubble in one of the tires!

I am on the Goodyear Eagle Sport 18" RFT. I check them frequently for pothole damage and they've held up for 11K miles. Hopefully they'll last to 50K. We'll see...

I think mine had the issue after a dozen of potholes, one really big one on the highway in the dark going about 75 mph...

And nope, did not get that tire coverage, but lowkie regretting it.

Update

Ended up replacing the tire today for $380 installed.
For all I know, the bubble could have been there for at least a month until I discovered it, since thats when I last washed my car.

I have a long road trip coming up and was not gonna YOLO it with this tire.

Once the treads are gone on all 4 tires, or whenever i run into another one of these (knocking on wood HARD), I will swap them with taller sidewall ones (basically 7 series sizes). Confirmed with the boys at the dealership, it shouldn't mess with the warranty at all.
Undecided on RFT's or non-RFT's when the time comes.

Also here is a pic that I took of the old tire today, worth replacing imo.

fingers crossed nothing else happens.

Happy with my 19's here in Florida. No issues yet but I'm guessing we may have somewhat better roads here. I got every option LESS larger rims for this and ride quality. 540d x drive m sport.

I'm on the 759 20" in Virginia on Michelin A/S 3+. I went 18 months with no issues then pot hole, bubble on sidewall front passenger. Replaced it and 4 weeks later hit a pot hole on the interstate and blew the newly replaced tire. Lets see how long the next one last. I blew out the same passenger tire on my OEM eagle RF tires before i switched them all over to the A/S 3+.

I don't there is a tire out there on these 20's that can take a good pot hole. When you hit it, it makes your teeth chatter.

But I love the looks of them and Tirerack has excellent roadhazard so its really only the inconvenience factor.
