M5 "Style" Rear Diffuser on M550
Slapped this on yesterday. I like it better than OEM gray diffuser (that I'm having wrapped today in gloss black as a back - up)

Titan: Can we have some more pics from straight on, etc? Also a link for it, cost, finish and fitment, etc. And maybe some detail on removing the OE lower cover piece. There's been some limited discussion on the removal, but a more detailed description would be beneficial. Maybe a pic of the backside of the OE one showing the clips or tabs, which would show what direction one applies pressure to remove it. Like you, I don't care for the dark gray either and I am in the process of converting all the cerium to gloss black. The only items left are this lower rear trim piece and my wheels. Thanks much!

The new diffuser requires cutting and sanding of outside edges by exhaust tips in order to clear M550 tips. If you've got some skills and patience with a dremel and are detailed, it will turn out fine. If you don't, do not purchase this diffuser as it will not clear M550 tips. I had to install and yank off 5 times and in the process broke one clip. I'll have another diffuser in about a week and will show where and how it needs to be cut (more will be cut on next diffuser for additional tip clearance). For $189 I was pleased with how well it fits (I knew it wouldn't clear tips) and the next one should not take me more than an hour now that I know what I'm doing

Titan: Thanks so much for your reply and additional information. It was very helpful and I look forward to further information/modifications and photos of both pieces.

Here are some backside pics of M550 OEM rear diffuser.
First, remove screws from bottom edge of diffuser using socket #8. Very easy to do and don't forget the ones on the farthest, bottom edges. Next, start on the drivers side and pull diffuser straight out with a quick tug. You can reach your hands underneath and/or inside exhaust cut out for best grips. There are 2 clips on the vertical edges. Start with bottom and work up to second clip. Quick, sudden pulls work best. Once the first side of diffuser is loose you can use a push - pull method and work your way across the top applying slight pressure to the bumper with one hand as you give a quick tug at each diffuser clip with the other. Pulling on diffuser at a point away from a clip and without applying some pressure on the bumper increases chances of clips breaking. Once all top clips are removed, the passenger side vertical clips along the edge should be easy to remove. As you remove the diffuser, try to keep it straight and level until fully removed. This will reduce the chances of clips breaking. I had mine wrapped so that is the black vinyl you see in the pics around the edges. |

Thanks much for the description and pics Titan! Now I have a much better idea on the removal process. Sure nice to know that the upper portion of the bumper cover doesn't need to be removed to get at the lower section.
If you end up putting your OE wrapped back on your car for a look, I'd love to see a pic of that. Last edited by Rotherd31; 04-26-2020 at 09:55 AM.. |

Not at all long winded IMO. It needed to be such to accurately describe how to remove it! Thanks again! Now when my body shop opens up again, paint will come next.

I just realized that you have the exact look I'm going for! Cerium silver trim replaced with black and 728m wheels! Where did you order the wheels if you don't mind me asking.

Found them on eBay. New takeoffs with 30 miles on them. The wheels led me to replace all cerium with gloss black. Then I didn't like the white in the BMW emblems so for now I have black overlays until I decide what to do for those
