2002 bmw's

anyone here have any experience with the 2002 model bmw. found a deceent looking 2 door 1600 i believe sitting out behind a guys garage. looks to be in decent shape. gonna go back and talk to him about sale possibly. not really sure what to look for. was thinking of just fixing any mechanical issues and driving as is for a daily driver?

The mechanical parts of the 1600/2002 are really simple and easy to fix. Lots of parts are available from lots of sources, including your BMW dealer.

The real problem is rust. Lift up the carpets and look at the floor. It is not unusual to have the pedal cluster almost fall out, and have big holes in the floor. The front tires pile sand in between the body and front fender which rusts out both. The rear fender lip will rust really badly and separate from the quarter panel. All of this is fixable if you have the time and money.

They are a really great driving car, but could use a bit more horsepower.

+1 Rust is a big problem on these, but a fantastic car to drive and own!

We can get you any OEM parts you could need. We offer the entire Mobile Tradition catalog.

Also you might want to check out www.bmw2002faq.com its a great resource for all E10 owners.

okay thanks for the help. waiting on a call back from the guy. plan on going and looking at it further. will definitly look for rust in the floor pan. not even sure if it runs at this point just saw it and got an urge to have it as a daily driver.

rear shock towers are a rally bad spot also. and the back of the front fenders where the rain gutters drain through is bad too.

The car your looking at, 1967?

i have a lifted 98 gmc right now so yes im serious. if it drives like a 68 volkswagen bug it would be a 200 percent improvement over what i have now and couldnt possibly get worse than 9 mpg. just thought i would look into it. think the e10's are cool looking older cars.

Another thing to watch out for is the cooling system. Like all BMWs its a weak spot. One suggestion when doing the cooling... E21 320i radiators will work and are a lot cheaper then the OEM E10 piece.

Good luck on the purchase! Keep us posted.

I bought my '73 2002 when it was 6 years old. I did wheels and tires first. The 165/70-13 Michelin-X tires were really bad in the rain. You can't use really big tires unless you install the 2002 Turbo fender flares.

Next was clutch, exhaust, radiator, Weber carb, struts/shocks, springs, radio.

The final investment was front fenders and quarter panels, all of the exterior trim pieces, and new paint. Looked like new after that.

Here's mine, I can get 225's under all four corners without the box flares.

I do have all the same 320 radiator, Pertrronix optical ignition, etc. Actually the less I tell you the better. It gets expensive
