Hi,

530e bought new on November 2020 - my wife used a lot the “I am cold” natural language command to increse temperature.

Recently she told me it stoped working and I confirmed it. We receive a “feature not possible to voice control “ message from the assistant.

Thought it might be related to the permissions but I have all the thinks checked, all services, including analysis.

Anyone else noticed this? Anyone knows why it stoped working?

Have you rebooted iDrive? Hold power button until it restarts (about 30 seconds).

Reboot for sure. One of my previous cars would often take several minutes after startup before voice recognition would work. That's always the first thing to try. It's just a big computer.

My Android phone voice recognition doesn't work unless I have mobile data or wifi turned on. Maybe you car's Internet connection has failed.

Yep. If the car’s Internet connection is down “behind the scenes” you’ll get this as well. Since it relies on server side processing for the Personal Assistant. The reboot forces it to re-connect.

The other tell tell signs are if you start asking the voice command stuff that is silly like “I’m bored” it will respond that it basically doesn’t get that command. Tell tell signs you need a reboot to try and re-establish the data connection.

I’m not aware of a way to “see” the connection status and restart it without the song and dance of a reboot.

Just rebooted iDrive as suggsted. After saying “I am cold”, the answer is “sorry but this function can not be voice controlled”. Tried “increase temperature” and the answer was exactly the same.

Tried “I am bored” command and it worked, answering a suggestion to change to sport mode and showing sport dials on center screen.

I am not looking forward to go to the dealer with this issue

That sounds like voice control is working.

Can you confirm you have a MY2021+?

If you look at the last 8 chars of your VIN the first character would be the following by MY:

L = 2020
M = 2021
N = 2022

I just had a thought. When it's working properly, is the car smart/clever enough to know which passenger said "I am cold" and adjust only the temperature on that side?

Asking because the wife is constantly complaining that I have the car set too chilly. I have the heated seats set to come on for the driver when the temperature drops to 50, and to come on for the passenger when the temperature drops to 65.

Yeah tried this and the microphone array picks up the passenger if they speak

Also remember that the stratified air dial is still there...its just buried in the MENU now instead of the dials being exposed where you can temper the air warmer/cooler from the dash vents.

Tempering the dash air vents is one way to get around the other front passenger being too warm or too cold vs the driver. They can use the stratified air temp (dial?...not sure what it is in the G chassis) to temper the air to their liking while not bothering the driver's setting.


EDIT: just did a quick search...here's the instructions on how to get to the stratified air dials through iDrive...again, I believe it can also be retrieved pressing the MENU button, too:

Change the call sign from hey bmw to computer, and change your last name to Picard. It will work just fine then 😉

I am sure it is MY2021 (my vin has no L, M or N in the last 8 digits). Moreover, the thing worked a treat a month ago. MY wife used it frequently. There are two possibilities: some kind of parameter that we changed/ was changed or it was result of the lst software update (either intended or a bug), but in this case I would expect other people in EU would be affected and notice it.

Odd that it doesn't have an M for 2021. I thought the VIN format was worldwide, but that may be just the US.

I only asked as I know for certain that MY2020 lacks the feature, but MY2021+ has it. Us on MY2020 are stuck with the lobotomized version of iDrive 7. It all looks like it is there, but we're quickly reminded it isn't all there all the time.

Anyway, the only solution is probably to get BMW to re-install the car's firmware and update it to the latest version. The latest version at the dealer will always be 1 version ahead of whatever you can get OTA since you're on MY2021 and can get OTA updates. Currently, 07/21 is available OTA which means 11/21 is out at the dealer. That may fix it...

Since you're having an issue the dealer should be able to install the update for free under warranty.

I use it primarily to set navigation destinations since I can use it while at speed, but I have occasionally used it for other things while at speed too.

For instance, I've used it to turn on seat massage in the middle of a long overnight drive where I was getting a bit long in the tooth (4 hours in), but didn't want to take my hands off the steering wheel since I was keeping an eye out for deer. On that same drive it was very easy to turn off the ambient lighting to help me spot deer easily. Done via this method.

I also will use it to change radio stations fairly often...

It is a good complement to the physical buttons, but they still win since it isn't instant.

Has the car just passed 3 years old by any chance?
Do you need to renew a subscription possibly?

Not sure what it might be but perhaps the internet connection is dropped because your missing a subscription
Might be the remote services perhaps?
