Clicking noise when turning steering wheel while stopped

I'm having a clicking/clunking noise whenever I turn my steering wheel while stopped or moving very slowly (e.g. turning into a parking spot or garage). It sounds like it's coming from outside somewhere in the engine bay although you can hear it inside the cabin too. I believe it's coming from the steering rack assembly. It sounds like there's something loose that's causing the clicking/clunking sound. It happens more when it's hot outside or after driving the car a good bit (and it getting to operating temp). Any ideas?

Your videos won't load for me. Do you have spacers on the front wheels? See the attached Technical Service Bulletin. Just a shot.

Updated the links. Hopefully they're visible now.

Thanks for the TSB. I read it and I don't think it's the issue as I hear the sound by moving the steering wheel really quickly back and forth when the car is stationary and even when it's off. Also, I don't have wheel spacers.

Hello, new here. Did you manage to solve the issue? I have the same cracking noise while turning the steering only right during standby or slow moving.

Is it like a low pitched creaking sound? When turning wheel and backing up slowly let’s say?

Gotcha, so it’s more of a tick or click. Ok never mind.

Likely the steering gear. A common issue on many German brands.

Actually for the G30, post #2 by Joe is the most likely culprit. The electric steering in the G30 is not known to be an issue, but on this forum and on Facebook forum, the friction rings seem to take care of the ticking from the front end on G30s.

It's often a steering gear issue, and it is quite common. A useful video:

It could be bad CV joints on front axle. It is said to be a typical symptom. I would check for leak of grease on it.

Issue solved. It was the steering wheel rack. It was changed completely with the electrical motor and issue disappeared.
