22 M550 Buyout?
I am three months away from lease-end of my '22 M550. It has been a great experience, as was my '19 M550 and two 550I Msports before. I have owned 25 BMW's.
With no new version coming out I have to contemplate what to do. This is my daily driver. I cannot find a replacement. I do not want an M5. I am fortunate to have a 911 Turbo S as my exotic. My buyout is a nice $45k and will have 36-38k miles at the end of the lease. It is loaded. I'm looking for opinions and experiences with a long-term owner of this car or tech. I drove an X5M60 which of course is not a substitute. That was before driving it which was a huge disappointment. Who wants a 5k RPM before gear shift at a steady 30 MPH on a neighborhood road?? I will buy it out unless the knowledge base of this group shoots up some red flags. I'm not interested in buying it and flipping it. Thanks. |

Almost exact situation as you , had 2018 m550i and now have a 2021 m550i Lease coming to an end. I don’t really need an suv since we have one in the family.
I was as well thinking of m60i x5 as a replacement and scheduled a test drive soon , but from my last test drive of m50i x5 I was also dissappnted in the sloppy steering and side to side sway of the vehicle hoping they fixed in m60i. What exactly you didn’t like about the x5 m60i? As far as reliability most long term owners don’t find any serious problems and if I buy it out I will either get the 3rd party extended warranty or find a good deal on bmw one. |

I bought out my 530i because the G60 isnt't really enticing for me value-wise. It's more expensive, interest rates and Money Factors are way higher compared to in the past, and there's just a lot of features that the G60 replaced in favor of appearance.
I didn't get any extended warranty. Extended warranty is a gamble, and for the most part, the seller always wins (I mean, why sell it if they're gonna lose money?). I opted to self-insure. I believe I'll still come up ahead than paying 4-5k for an extra 3 years of coverage. That being said, for you guys with the N63, I'd probably still get a warranty. Why? Reading annecdotes from people on the internets (mainly Reddit), mechanics still see issues with the N63 despite being updated (N63TU3). It's definitely way more reliable than previous versions, but when it does break, it hurts. And if you do get a warranty, I recommend messaging Christine @ BMW of Camarillo and compare hers with others. It's a BMW warranty (not 3rd party) and you'll find her email all over the different Bimmerpost forums. |

Buy it out. They are great cars and quite reliable. The car is a known quantity for you, has reasonable mileage and will undoubtedly last many more years. I did that on the only BMW I leased, my 2010 535xi M Sport. Owned it for nine trouble free years and sold it to a local friend who still has it. All others I bought for cash/finance. I have only owned 10 BMWs but I have kept them all beyond their warranties. I also sold BMWs for seven years in my "Early Retirement" period so I do know a bit about them and I plan to keep my 2019 540xi M Sport for a long time. Especially since I really don't like what they are doing to the interiors and electronics of the newest ones. They will have to pry it out of my cold dead hands, as Charlton Heston might have said.--Bob

Over here, there are lots of old BMWs on the road (cheaper to service here, and cultural differences regarding throwing things away), but very few with a V8. |

Buy that beeyotch.
If rumors are true about the next M5, it will have close to or above 1,000 HP. That may change your mind.

The natural upgrades from the M550i are the F90, Panamera, and 911. With the Porsche itch scratched and the F90 eliminated, buying out the M550i seems like the right play. They aren’t going to make them like this again. |

My MY20 M550i has 51K miles on it and is my DD. I bought an EW and plan to keep it for several more years (no particular end date in mind). My EW is valid for another 7 years and up to 120K miles so I'm enjoying the car without any worries. That said, there have been no worries other than the usual expansion tank coolant leak (and a low pressure fuel pump failure) at mid-30K mileage that were both taken care of by the original BMW warranty. All well since then.
You're indeed fortunate to be driving a 911 Turbo S, but *in addition* to an M550i is living the dream I'd say!

The suspension was loose in Comfort. My wife's X5 4.0 is tighter.
The gear changes in Sport at low-speed driving (neighborhood streets) was painful. The RPM's went to 4500-5k before shifting between 2,3,4. It wasn't " bucking" as if it wanted to launch, it felt as if it was being held back from a low-speed smooth gear change. My M550 is like butter. I will probably chance mine although I will drive the'24 X5PHEV. I had a 550 Msport that at 49500 miles i was going to trade it in. I drove a CLS 550. They gave it to me for the weekend. I drove it home, a 10-mile highway loop, and put it in my garage. Returned it the next morning. What a dog. I bought my 550 Msport out, purchased a BMW Platinum warranty, drove it to 99500 miles without any issues, and turned it in for my '19 M550. The first one delivered to Florida. |

I need a daily. I have a 911 Turbo S.
I like the M550 because it's a sleeper. Also, it's like going from a Porsche Turbo to a GT3, not as "refined" lol. It makes sense though to all on this post I'm sure as far as difference, not necessarily taste. |

If anybody reads this and has a lease running up and an attractive residual buyout price and does want to consider flipping it, feel free to send me a PM. Or @
me in a reply here and I’ll see it. OP - I’d buy it out. You’re good at that price to sell it or trade it later this year. The only things out there that I like the design of are the 8 series or maybe an Audi. I feel like if you wanted either of those, you’d have already said it.

the V8 going to have to pull the car and battery once the battery runs out! for me it's either F90 M5C or a Hyundai Ioniq 5N both have around the same power to weight ratio. if neither comes into fruition, my 550 is no slouch. |

I’d hang on to it , no question
You’re not going to get a new bmw that matches that now You know how it has been treated Reliability would appear to be good , it reading if any serious issues in these forum other than coolant leaks which seem to be common across the range not just the 550 I think you’d regret getting rid of it |

Buy it, the N63 TU2/3 is proving to be just as dependable as the B58. Check the log/blog thread here were we report issues for all G30's.
BMW sure has had some blunders with a few V8's (and I have owned them) which leads people to make blanket assumptions about all of them, but this engine should do you well. Over 100k miles, all BMW's are money pits. They are just expensive to "maintain". I have an E39 540 with 130k miles on it, ask me how I know. Your garage is my aspiration.

OP - You have to keep the M550. It's a fantastic car and irreplaceable. I've always loved the 5 series. I've owned an E34, E39, 2 E60's and we now have our 3rd M550. We did European delivery for our 2018 M550 and turned our 2021 lease in early in order to get one of the last 2023 M550's. We had 38K miles on the 2018 and 33K miles on the 2021 with zero issues. The 2023 M550 will be a keeper since we hate the ultra wide screens and lack of physical controls.
In the meantime, I'll be keeping my 2020 F82 LMB 6MT long term as well as my E24 which I purchased in 1985. |
