Yet another, start/stop post
I’ve finally been able to BimmerCode my 2023 530xe to default to start in sport mode. I’ve deactivated the auto start stop function in the BDU, but not working…. Any insights appreciated

BMW disabled the ASS memory in their latest updates if I'm not mistaken. If you have recently updated your G30 then that's it.
I coded this a couple of weeks ago with Bimmercode and it's been working fine. I've stayed away from updates, though. |

But if you coded to start in sport, doesn't sport mode kill ASS?

You can’t code Auto Start Stop to be off on a PHEV like the 530e as it doesn’t make any sense to do so. If you somehow could I can only imagine this would lead to reliability problems.
Unlike the ICE car the PHEV has two powertrains and the ICE portion is optional, but the electric motor is not. Why would you want to anyway? The engine disengaging and re-engaging is an extremely seamless and smooth experience on the PHEV. |

Sport mode itself doesn’t disable the ASS Joe-BMW33
The only way to stop ASS is to have the car in XtraBoost mode. Kind of a work around except I don’t like the gear ratios for cruising around. To that point, LogicalApex , that’s why I think it’s somehow possible. The car does shut it off in xtraboost. The seamlessness of it is true in hybrid mode only when transferring from hybrid to gas. In sport mode, as soon as I take off the ICE motor kicks on and doesn’t use the electric motor. So, in sport mode it runs just like the 530i. Why would I want the option? Sometimes I like to cruise with the ICE motor and I HATE the start stop mainly because it happens when rolling at low speeds. And simply. Personal preference |

You can hardwire disable the ASS. Someone makes a jumper for it to permanently make the button think it's in off mode. You have to take the console apart. Cant remember where I saw this. Maybe on YouTube?

HerkHealer I also saw that yesterday within my 100,000,000 google searches! My car doesn’t have a physical switch. So not even sure that would work!

Ah, I’d didn’t realize the PHEV’s behave differently than ICE in terms of Sport mode and ASS.
One has to wonder if the 2025 M5 PHEV will follow suit. That would be a major turn off for prospective buyers.

Joe-BMW33 Agreed. I’d have to hope they’d keep or bring back the physical button for that model.
I found a bunch of codes in expert mode that has engine option and I can change it from PHEV. I definitely don’t have the guts to even dip my toe in that 😂😂 |

The ICE engine is detuned and underpowered on the PHEV so it can’t deliver the cars rated HP on its own. So it can never operate without the electric motor. Only with it for the purpose of delivering the rest of the power the electric motor cannot. Sport mode is all about keeping the ICE “on” as much as possible (but not all the time) it reduce the lag period needed to get it woken up. For instance, you’re on the highway and you want to pass quickly. You hit the kick down and the car wakes up the ICE and gives you maximum power. You’ll feel a very small lag where you asked for power and it needed a second to get it there for you. Not long, but still a delay. Sport mode would have that engine alive and ready “instantly”. The car can still decide under various conditions that the ICE isn’t needed at all and will shut it off. It will also dynamically decide how much of a load it places on the ICE engine even when it is running. The best way to understand the PHEV is that it is an electric car first with the ICE car being used “as needed”. As such, you can’t ever get it to always and/or only use the ICE portion. That’s why BMW removed the ASS button on the PHEV as it doesn’t make logical sense. But honestly, what are you missing? The areas where I want the ICE “ready” Sport mode with the shifter to the left gets me all that I want. It gets me fast acceleration instantly. The engine starting and stopping isn’t a “problem” I’ve hit. The stuff the ICE cars get that can be annoying like hesitation at the start due to the engine needing to be started doesn’t exist. Nor do you have the annoyance that it is 100F outside and you lose your AC while the engine is cut off at a light and etc. Last edited by LogicalApex; 03-14-2024 at 05:47 PM.. |
